Lyndonville was one of the Vermont communities hit hard by flooding, and a search for a driver who was swept away in high water was underway at noontime.

State officials said in a news briefing Thursday morning that water rescues are ongoing in Lyndonville and they said it was one of the hardest-hit areas in the state.

Our Adam Sullivan said a search was underway at noontime for an elderly man who police say drove through high water on Center Street and was swept away. Crews are searching for him by boat and drone.

The National Weather Service says the area got three to four inches of rain in town. Route 5 in town was left underwater.

Boy he came and visited that area last night.

It’s crazy I lived here for so many years without really thinking of flash flooding… but now these events are like almost becoming normal.

The Winooski River at Waterbury has had 3 of its top 4 crests in the last calendar year.  That’s insane.  Irene still is the top mark though.

Beautiful, classic summer day out there..warm, with a nice breeze, flies are staying where they belong. Ya gotta love it! Can’t believe some of those pics from the ville though. Actually went to school there for a time and legit recognize some of those streets, just heartbreaking to see. A lot of good people in that part of New England, really sucks to see.

That looks like broad Street. I hope the Bagel Depot didn't get flooded. I love that place.

Just had 0.91" in 15 minutes, 4:48-5:03, with at least 0.6" in the first 8 minutes.  The only thunder was the water pounding on the roof, had some mid-20s gusts as well.  This was the west end of a much larger clump of rain - might be some flash flood issues in southern Somerset County northeast of here.
