Holston_River_Rambler
Just drove up to Kingsport from Morgan county. A few small trees down on roads in my neighborhood near Coalfield, but nothing blocking the roads. Looked like a tree was down near the ridgefields market in Kingsport, but someone had cleaned it up. A lot of tractor trailers were taking a break on exit ramps on 81. Fortunately it was mostly a head wind driving up 81 so it wasn’t too bad of a drive. Holston_River_Rambler
Some huge trees floating down from the N fork of the Holston and I’ve actually seen a few otters out swimming on the Hawkins county side of the river.
Carvers Gap
Hearing of power outages on the east side of town. I think east of I-126 is getting hammered. Looks like the mountain communities of Boone, Roan Mountain, Mountain City, maybe Elizabethton, and Butler....getting it pretty good.

John1122
Had a 44mph gust that took my power. I am outside posting this and I can hear trees going down on the mountainside behind my house. It's rained two more inches since midnight and it's coming down in buckets right now.

Carvers Gap
Looks like MRX reported a gust to 52mph. Things are starting to settle down a bit here. Still getting gusts, but sustained winds are slightly less.

Here in a few hours, I may be hauling a generator over to my wife's office to keep a fridge with expensive stuff running. I can almost draw a line down I-26, and everything to the east is worse than the west.

Jed33
I was just wondering if the reason the winds died down here in Morristown had to do with the eye moving over. They went almost completely calm but have since picked back up again a little but nothing like a few hrs ago. Lots of trees down here and power is out in places here as well. It is amazing to think that the eye of a tropical system actually made it to and crossed through East TN!

Most modeling last night was well east of the NHC track. That modeling verified - GFS, NAM, RGEM, and I think the HRRR all had that. The GFS and NAM were far too strong with wind gusts. The RGEM looked like it did really well for the even - just like it does in the winter.
Carvers Gap
One thing that is interesting, the forecasted downsloping did not verify in some areas. Again, draw a line along I-26, and points to the NE along the mountains got hit with some decent rain this morning. It may be the downslope saved them from much worse. If any of the North Carolina mountain folks swing by this thread, we would definitely be interested in your precip totals. Stay safe, everyone.

Matthew70
EMS out of NC .."It is no longer safe to leave your home, please do not attempt to travel the roadways if it is not an emergency. Multiple roads are blocked by trees and powerlines are down throughout the county. Too many to list. A large majority of the county is impassable. Trees and powerlines are falling faster than we can clear them. A day at work is not worth your life.Fire departments have had to suspend road clearing operations due to numerous trees falling around them while working. These operations will not resume until wind conditions improve and they can be conducted safely. Emergency services will only respond to immediate life threats until further notice and services may be severely delayed. Stay home!"

nrgjeff
From Nashville: Latest SPC mesoanalysis shows the center of Helene is north of Knoxville, with very low pressure readings across Middle Tennessee including 989mb at Nashville and 987.8mb at Livingston. Although not records and just outside the top 10, these are still unusually low pressure readings for our area. ShawnEastTN
I really haven't had much wind so far but as the eye passed to the north of me I'm now getting strongest wind gusts I've had so far. I wonder if a big part of that is that the mountains acted like a wall the first half for my location, but now with the change in wind direction with the passage of the eye the mountains aren't blocking, with the wind more WSW now. My 2 day rain total is 7.75".

nrgjeff
Re Shawn's post. These mountains are interesting every time. We really didn't have the mountain wave set-up, no inversion. Perhaps that means the mountains blocked like a good offensive line until the wind shifted. I had some 30 mph gusts of wind with the 8:30 Eastern band that went through Chatty; trees blew, carwash on the windows. Only lasted a few minutes - regrettable since I was busy. Wind has returned now but no rain, just mostly cloudy. We get that all the time in winter. Still the novelty of Helene being a TS in Tennessee is something else. It happens but it's rare. All that said our thoughts are with people facing much worse situations from the Mountains to the Coast, wind to flooding. I figure the Helene name will be retired. Carvers Gap
Here is one thing I have learned about TS and hurricane damage. It takes 24-48hrs to find out who has been hit the worst. Why? They have no comms and can’t travel. I doubt we know the worst of this yet. Either someone flies over it or someone drives/walks out. Stone Age type of communication stuff.
