Just south of the Pittsburgh CWA, Clarksburg, West Virginia (KCKB) has reached at least 98F. That is the hottest reading there since August 21, 1983. It reached 97F in 1988, 1995 & 2012.

97F at Morgantown, hottest since July 7, 2012.

Notably warm first half of summer. Easily the warmest on record at the airport, besting 1994 by nearly 1F. Officially, sixth in the threaded record... although I'm a little skeptical of these 19th century summertime readings.

3rd warmest in the Morgantown Area thread. A lot of the same years show up. Seems to agree 1876 was a hot first half of summer, but not to the tune of nearly 2.5F warmer than this year. 1892 was tossed due to missing the entire month of June.

Coming into today, we were even with August 1995 for hottest month at Pittsburgh International with a mean temp of 77.7. That should go up to about 77.9 or 78.0 after today, but will likely go down in the coming days.

Morgantown topped out at 94F, ending its streak of 95+ days at 3. That was the longest streak since the 5-day streak ending on August 3, 1995. There were two other occurrences of consecutive 95+ days since then, both of which occurred in 2012 - June 28 & 29, 2012 and July 6 & 7, 2012.

Clarksburg, West Virginia reached 98F yesterday and 96F today. The 98F reading was the highest since August 21, 1983, when it also reached 98F. It is the first time in the threaded record with consecutive days of 96F or better since June 26 & 27, 1969.

Through the first half of the summer, it has been 2F warmer than 1995. In 1995, the second half of summer [July 16 - August 30] averaged 77.7F. To match 1995's final summer temperature (75.1F), it would need to average about 75.7F for the remainder of summer.

Second half of summer 1995 was absolutely brutal, so it’ll be tough but this seems doable.

If we don't get any tomorrow, looks like awhile before any more chances.

Tomorrow seems like a sure bet but who knows anymore.

Edit: aaaaand, now it doesn’t. This is getting comical.

Looks like some rain on the way for a change. At the moment, the radar depiction looks exaggerated from ground truths. Wheeling has only had 0.01" despite some dark greens and yellows overhead for some time (see below). Cloud ceiling is way up at 12,000 feet, so dry air in the lower levels are making it difficult for the rain to make it all the way to the surface.

There are, however, some embedded, slow-moving heavier downpours, especially across Greene and southern Washington Counties. The Washington County Airport recently observed thunder, although no measurable rain has fallen yet.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
KEY MESSAGES:

- Warmer and more humid on Sunday.
- A few rounds of disturbances pass to close out the weekend into
  the middle of next week.
- Moderate risk of excessive heat beginning in August.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Further modification of the airmass continues on Sunday which will
likely be the warmest day of the forecast period as probabilities
sit up to 70% for >90F in the urban areas and valleys, though upper
cloud coverage will increase from the southwest and could keep highs
a little cooler. Ensemble clusters all absorb a cutoff upper low
across the deep South back into the southwest flow aloft and show
good agreement on its track through the Ohio Valley, but differ some
on the amplification. This will return a more unsettled pattern to
close out the end of the weekend into the beginning of next week as
a few more disturbances pass through.

Thereafter, ensembles still show notably good agreement by mid week
in central CONUS ridging which would place our area in northwest
flow aloft. While these patterns tend to be dry on average, they are
also supportive of rounds of severe weather chances as we
experienced in a similar pattern last week. Machine learning does
paint a broad-brushed potential for a severe threat by mid week, but
details won`t become clear for several more days. In addition, heat
concerns return. Accordingly, CPC has issued another moderate risk
of excessive heat from August 1st through August 7th. Lastly, with
flow aloft extending downstream of the Canadian Rockies, wildfire
smoke could make its debut to the Pittsburgh region this year.

Another 90+ reading at PIT... 15th on the year. Technically, 20th most in the threaded record; however, most of those are from the 19th century and suspect.

Since 1901, only 8 years have seen more days of 90+ at this point in the summer:

  • 1988, 23
  • 1966, 23
  • 1952, 20
  • 1934, 20
  • 2012, 18
  • 1936, 17
  • 1933, 16
  • 1911, 16
