Hi @SACRUS

Liberty was referencing 1993 and I was referencing the killer heat wave of 1995.  Sorry, my error.   Has this area seen Heat Index readings similar or equal to 1995?  That was the worst heat I can ever remember.  Large loss of life in Chicago.  I believe HI readings around here topped out in the 115 degree range but I'm not sure.  It was stiffing heat though.  HI readings in the Mid-West topped out near 125 degrees.

we also need to see if we can get away from this southerly flow that keeps Long Island from having consistent 90s, it's very annoying to be the part of the tristate area that is missing out on this.

It comes with the territory of living right near the ocean. Since 2010 to 2013 we haven’t seen that much deep westerly flow with our heat waves. Very strong onshore component to the winds during the warm seasons in recent times. JFK is just weeks away from its longest streak on record of not reaching 100°. But I am not sure if the ASOS was relocated back in the 90s making it more susceptible to sea breezes. So there can be a combination of factors at play here. The part of the airport near Ozone Park is several degrees warmer than where the ASOS is currently located in a marshy area next to Woodmere.

No wind in NY harbor, they cutting sailing short

Gusting to 33 mph in Farmingdale. The Ambrose Jet usually peaks between 4-7 pm. So most spots near the shore will see gusts in the 30-40 mph range later on. Some models have peak gust potential over 40 in a few spots further east as we head into the evening. You can see the surf picking up with white caps in Long Beach with a very refreshing breeze for the boardwalk fair. I went to one of those many years ago with no breeze and couldn’t stay more than 15 minutes. So I much more enjoy days like this with a refreshing breeze.

But they really had no problem exceeding 100 degrees in both 2010 and 2011.

Do you think the oceans will blunt extreme climate change by regulating how hot the temperatures can get?

Maybe our high temperatures will now level off and even go down a little for coastal areas?

Is this wind the reason we saw those two teens die in the Rockaways the other day? That was tragic.

Lifeguards should work until sunset and not be allowed to leave at 6 PM

State ocean beaches close at 7 during the week, and 8 on weekends. Can’t lay blame on lifeguards when people choose to basically break the law by swimming after the parks close. A tragedy nonetheless.

The 90s were amazingly hot and we saw more 90s temps in that decade than any other before or since.  I would extend this period from 1991-2002.  1991, 1993, 1995, 1999 and 2002 were all record setting hot summers with very high numbers of 90 degree days and several 100 degree days right to the coast.

The period 2010-2013 was similar but except for 2010, the heat wasn't as prolonged as it was in those earlier super hot summers.

That’s not every beach. At jones we close at 8 and often 830 during heatwaves.

it’d currently a full on sand storm at jones and im getting blasted as i type. Definitely gusting into the 30s. Wave heights have increased to 6’ or so and building fast. Numerous rescues so far.

I grew up in Long Beach and got used to the much stronger winds between 4-7 pm on summer days like this. The trick was eating your lunch by 1pm so there wasn’t as much blowing sand. Bike riding along boardwalk and near the beach was a challenge was so much blowing sand at times. The ocean conditions would get pretty chaotic with numerous lifeguard rescues. People parking near the beach quickly figured out that it wasn’t a good idea to keep the convertible top down.;)

Dunno, I know the ocean can be dangerous, but there is something to be said for self reliance.  You have to be aware and respect the power.  It would be a shame to close the beaches because there were not enough lifeguards.  However, we live in a very litigious area...
