Leaf out exploding in the SVT banana belt. Low 70s today and mostly sunny. Perfect May day.

It was low 50s and showery with a ceiling around 2kft this afternoon.  Did hit 61F at 11am but was all downhill from there with wet-bulb cooling in showers.  Finally broke up and dried up rapidly between 5-6pm.

Its crazy how comfortable it is as long as the sun is out.  Even temps in the 50s feel all good when the sun is out.  Coming out of winter, it all feels mild.

And we were somewhere between you both. It was sunny early and it was nice but we clouded up and had a few sprinkles and the temps dropped. I thought we were going to get rained on playing golf tonight but it cleared off nicely.

Shut ‘em down, ha.

This evening at 5pm I found myself on Spruce Peak with the dog.  Looking over at the fabled Nosedive.

Nosedive is holding in there for 1,300 vertical feel, but the lower 700 feet (out of view) becomes a problem.  Especially the lower 400 feet.

It’s crazy that snow is only made on this trail for like a 4-day period during the winter.  Just a single snowmaking run during a midweek period to build the base.

I’ve always wondered how this trail would be with the Superstar treatment.  It would last a long time.  You think the natural snowpack is getting to 7-8 feet, add in multiple weeks of snowmaking and this top 1,300 verts would make it to June every year.

Been an awesome Fri-Sun stretch for Memorial Day Weekend… looks like we may hold off the rain tomorrow too.

Perfect hiking weather.

Dog is milking those snow patches at the top of Haselton where the hiking trail goes up the Nosedive turns.

You couldn’t draw up a better stretch for a weekend.  I’d sacrifice tomorrow if we could lock in a rain on weekdays/sunny on weekends pattern for the summer.

It’s the growing season.

Today felt like September but with a May sun angle… it’s amazing.  The fresh light green, this isn’t tired vegetation.  It’s new growth and high sun angle.

This is my favorite time of year to be honest.  Love winter, but the lead up to the longest day of the year with fresh vegetation and comfortable temperatures… it’s hard to beat these days.

44F currently, and MVL did hit 66F for a brief max, despite a 5-min ob not exceeding 64F.

Yup, mine as well. The period between mid-May to 4 JUL is the best, provided the weather cooperates.

What an incredible stretch of early summer weather. Really good for anything you want to do outside. Hot enough to swim, dry enough to hike or bike without a sweat, warm patio temps till sunset, and cool nights with the windows open. We welcome the rain later this week but then let's re rack this all summer please.

Some warm season firsts (for this season only, IMBY):
1st firefly - evening of June 1.  :D
1st deerfly - afternoon of June 3.  :fulltilt:
1st luna moth - this afternoon, hanging on a seedling ironwood, shaded by the biggest oak (23.75" diam/80+ tall) on our woodlot.

Garden finally in yesterday and today, though only the first of 4-5 sequential green bean plantings.
Latest I've ever planted cool-season crops (carrots, pac choi, etc.) and latest for initial row of beans.  May be the new best way, may be a disaster.
Early lilac and quince blossoms are done, late lilacs coming into full, waiting on the peonies.

I have not posted in some time.  Not much weather going on.  Other than .05" of rain yesterday morning we have not had any rain since May 27th.  Pollen is coating everything.  We have also not had even one clap of thunder this season.  Hopefully the showers/storms will hold together long enough to give us some rain this evening.  Things are getting very dry.

On a totally different subject, I have missed a northward facing webcam on the summit of Mt Washington.  I called them last winter and told them I would give them a donation to buy a new cam.  To do so they had to build an outside enclosure and also put in a new window.  So it was a pretty big job.  Others chipped in too. The camera is now live.

Warm season is here.  The daily dog walk route along the valley bottom.  Very green along the river here at 750ft.  Fun to live next to some moving water in the warmer months.

Hit 87F today.

Amazing how much the quiet path has changed at that river location.  Watched it evolve since about 2003, just insane.

It’s interesting that despite the high-end severe risk, with wind and TORs possible, the rainfall was by far the most impactful element.

It rained hard.  It was a “this is going to be a problem” type rainfall.  I was in a vehicle at 1800ft at work during it… and after watching weather on this mountain for 15 years, this rainfall was a sign of problems in lower elevations if it was flashing like this up high.

I alerted BTV to the situation at the mountain and they issued the first Flash Flood Warning immediately.

BULLETIN - EAS ACTIVATION REQUESTED
Flash Flood Warning
National Weather Service Burlington VT
444 PM EDT Sun Jun 23 2024

The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
Northern Washington County in central Vermont...
Western Caledonia County in northeastern Vermont...
East Central Chittenden County in northwestern Vermont...
Southern Lamoille County in northwestern Vermont...

* Until 745 PM EDT.

* At 444 PM EDT, Thunderstorms producing heavy rain in steep terrain
is driving flash flooding in the vicinity of Mount Mansfield.
Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall
rate is 1 to 2 inches in 30 minutes. Flash flooding is already
  occurring.

  HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

  SOURCE...Public reported.

IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban
areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as
other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
Morrisville, Worcester, Stowe, Middlesex, Morristown, Elmore,
Morrisville Village, Waterbury, Waterbury Village, Calais, East
Montpelier, Moretown, Hyde Park, Woodbury, Wolcott, Underhill
State Park, Duxbury, Bolton, Cambridge and Underhill.

This warning was soon updated with law enforcement reporting multiple washouts and roads out across the area.

I give BTV credit for accepting my observations as fact in the moment (that the rainfall was going to be a problem) and they acted on it.  Subsequent downstream flooding in Stowe and the Worcester Range was severe, but they were able to get the warnings out quick.

I don’t think flash flooding was the primary concern but it’ll be the most costly part of these storms.

You've built up a relationship with BTV over the years at the mountain so I am sure that must have helped.  We had some heavy early morning rain, .91" but only lighter stuff later, adding another .40".  It actually dried enough for me to mow the lawn in the early afternoon.

How many mountain side saunas were victims?

There’s just debris everywhere.  This is along RT 100 in Stowe heading to Morrisville… I’m not even sure where the waterway is but there’s just trees littered throughout the fields.  Still water and mud flowing out of the hillsides.

That escalated so fast yesterday.  Still crazy to me how sitting at the mountain it was fine, fine, fine, then every waterway exploded at once and it was very not fine.  It felt like in 30 seconds every single creek went from routine to holy crap.

Heard anything about the Lamoille River?  I'm concerned about the LVRT.

I haven’t.  Not sure the northward extent of it.  Seemed like an axis from Underhill to Stowe to Worecester/Elmore/Wolcott.

Looks high but maybe not quite flood stage downstream here in Fairfax. Certainly nothing like the events last year.
