If anyone here is interested, I’m doing one more AmericanWx pool this year, the British Open pool. If so go to the PGA Tour thread and make your picks there. This time I’m asking for 7 picks (instead of 6 picks) in addition to you picking the final score to par of the tourney winner. Make sure that your 7 picks aren’t identical to anyone who picks earlier. All scoring rules will be the same as what was used for the US Open. Deadline is 11:59PM EDT Wed 7/17.

I have entered my picks in the thread.

What did you shoot?

It looks like the cut was +15 after the second round.  The first thing I saw when I went to the NHGA website was the final round pairings and it just happened to have a kid, well a kid to me, who is from this area of VT and played and worked at my former golf course.

@kdxkeni took a few more pictures of the from the front 9 at my course this afternoon. You’d also be interested in the numerous trees they have marked to take down over the off season. Some really big, old sugar maples that are at the end of their life, a few ash and several big white pines.

It looks like such a great old timey golf course. Can't tell you how many similar I've played. The kind where folks play through any kind of weather until they're told to get off.

So I bought new irons earlier this year and I’ve done ok with them. Still need lots of work from the fairway. I seem to hit them better with a little grass underneath the ball and our fairways tend to give pretty tight lies.

Late in the year I made what I consider my best golf purchase ever, a Ping G430 driver. I didn’t get a massive increase in distance but my consistency has greatly improved. It’s especially noticeable with my mishits. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a 19-20 handicap but my driving is so much better. I sort of don’t want the season to be ending. At least it’s gone out on a beauty.

Got fitted and ordered new irons last week. Titleist T150s. Vokey Wedges. And a taylormade driving iron.

First new irons and wedges in 12 yrs. Wicked excited.

The new driver and woods over the summer were huge.

Played 1 round before year end with the new irons and wedges and shot 80. Early returns from that round and weekly simulator session are that I hit a hit draw with the shorter irons and a straight ball with the longer irons. Not mad at that at all. After chatting with a few folks, the natural draw is the result of the fitting being up 3 degrees from neutral. I also think I come from over the top and pull hook things a bit. Something to work on.

Have to get them fitted, you'll hit the ball so much better.

Drivers and woods are easy these days. They’re all adjustable.
Irons is where the fitting matters most.
I’m really hoping to get to scratch at some point next year. I finished the season as a 3.0.

Does anybody in here use a golf watch and do they recommend?

I have used an older Garmin for the last several years. It’s a pretty basic model but I like it. It’s not as accurate as a laser range finder but even the basic  model I have has distances to hazards, the ability to measure shots and score tracking plus a few other things that I don’t really take advantage of. It also acts as a fitness tracker and can receive notifications from my phone. I’ve definitely gotten my $120 worth over the 5 or 6 years I’ve had it.

I got an Apple Watch for Christmas this year so I am going to be switching to using that with an app. We’ll see if I like that better.

I have a 10 yr old rangefinder. But only really use it for distance to flag. I think I could save 2-3 shots per round if I actually knew distances to hazards and F/B of greens. I suppose I could use app on phone, but don’t like having it on me while playing.

I have used ShotScope the last few years. I don't play as much as I used to, but I like it because it gives me data I can use beyond distances to front, middle, center, hazards, etc.

You can use it to track your yardages. It comes with screw caps you can put into grip of your clubs and they register your swing and tag the start and end of a shot that way. They are unique, so it knows when you had a 6i vs a PW. It can get a little wonky for a chip that doesn't involve a lot of arm/hand motion, but at worst it's a good quick judge of yardage to your target if you didn't want to know your club carries.

I’ve also been looking into and strongly considering https://www.arccosgolf.com
