Spring/Summer '24 Banter and Complaint Thread

Here's something intereting. There's a relative minimum of EF2+ tornadoes and total tornadoes in Missouri. On the third chart shown, I have chosen the wind probability climatology for June 24th. It is well known that June has the maximum number of wind reports of any month across the US. This chart shows the wind damage reports maximize at Kansas, also, what I'll call "Derecho Alley," from Iowa to Ohio. Also, the southern Appalachians have a maximum of wind reports. Thunderstorms are numerous in the southern Appalachians but sometimes there is not high deep-layer shear in summer. On the fourth chart you can see the hail over 1" maximizes in the central Plains, pretty much lines up with traditional tornado alley. The area with the maximum number of hail-days (of any hail size) is at Cheyenne, Wyoming to the Nebraska high plains and over to Goodland, Kansas (Not shown) Final map: total number of days of severe hail of over 1"

  • 2 weeks later...

Can anyone tell me why KIND and KLOT suddenly stopped updating every five minutes and went to just updating every hour since one this afternoon. Is it just a western region thing or all over?

Idk if I'm just dumb but I don't have any issue with LOT's radar on radarscope

The radar is fine, I am talking about the time series viewer through the NWS and NOAA. I just checked KEWR and they have been only updating hourly also. Must be a system wide thing. Just wonder if it is accidental or on purpose?

KFWA also switched to hourly at 12:55 (Eastern time) yesterday.

Has anyone seen (or heard lol) any of these 17yr cicadas that are supposed to be out by now?  Only thing I've heard so far is the buzzing of mosquitoes.

Isn't it a soil temp thing, got to imagine still not warm enough imby

Anyone getting their veggie garden started early this year?

Kinda. I’ve had cool weather crops in for three weeks (carrots, onions, peas, strawberries, cabbage, lettuce, potatoes). I was planning on doing the sweet corn, cukes, beans, tomatoes and peppers in the next couple of days. However, that’s on hold for a couple days due to the overproducing rain this afternoon. That’s not unusual for April, as I will end up with over 7 1/2” for the month. Fortunately, it looks like top shelf weather here until at least Friday afternoon.

Absolutely no complaints about the spring weather we've enjoyed in Northeast Indiana.  I couldn't walk out of the local garden center without picking a couple of these beauts.  No, I wasn't influenced by palm dude, but maybe by the above normal temps we've enjoyed this spring.

Those are some beauties. I’ve decided to expand my vegetable garden this year to not only tomatoes and peppers, but Swiss chard, brussel sprouts, potatoes, and cukes.

The bottom one is called a Majesty Palm. I don't know much about it except it is also supposed to be cold hardy.

2 years ago tomorrow we started a very impressive 4-day stretch of 90s with high humidity.  That included a few days where we reached 96, with heat indices near 105.  DVN hit 97 on the 12th.  That was almost as impressive as the infamous morch stretch to me.  What was most impressive is that the high temps were associated with dews AOA 70.  Usually to get temps that high this early in the year you'd need very dry air in place.

I thought it looked familiar, but couldn't put my finger on exactly which species it was.

The majesty palm is somewhat cold hardy, but not as much so as a few other species.

This spring / summer has reminded me of my childhood. This spring feels very nostalgic, like the springs I remember.

If we can get a squall going tonight, lighting up the skies to the west just before dark, it’ll be perfect

I remember these days as a kid asking my parents “is it going to get us?”

I feel that way about tonight.
