Yeah if we don't have a wet March then we are going to be in big trouble across most of the Upper Midwest. We really didn't recover from the drought all that much even in the wetter areas last fall. Combine that with the no frost and snowpack and we are already about 2-3 weeks ahead arguably from an evapotranspirational standpoint. I wouldn't really take whatever it's showing in the medium-long range seriously. Have to wonder if we will see a repeat of these apparent temperatures this coming summer in the Midwest. 19 hours of 110+ heat indices last summer in Des Moines, beating the previous record of 13 hours from 1995, 2010, and 2011. The hottest summer on record in Des Moines (1936) had just two hours. Not quite as impressive with 105F+ heat index hours, but still tied with 1936 & 2012. And behind only 1980, 1983, 1988 and 2011. Spring is coming early. Yesterday was my last day on the ice this year. Getting a little too soupy for my comfort. Usually can safely be on the ice until the last of April. While still low, the 47º dewpoint is 15º higher than it was last week when we reached the 70s, so it feels more springy. We REALLY need to start getting some rain. It is very dry here.
