Record high at DTW today of 64°. This is 20° warmer than the warmest temperature of January. Very breezy all day.

What an incredible start to the month of February for Detroit, although certainly not limited to that location but rather demonstrative of the entire region. Warmest mean high temperatures for the first 12 days of the month by nearly 1F. One of only three years with no measurable precipitation for the first 12 days of the month, and one of only two years with no snow at all. The other two years with no measurable precipitation (1991 & 1877) were also among the warmest starts to the month, albeit several degrees Fahrenheit cooler. Looks like El Nino on steroids for you guys.

Average high temperature for February 1 to February 12:

Crazy stuff. This must be a 1 in 1000-year winter heat wave up there, but barely registering with our derelict media these days.

Minneapolis

Green Bay

Milwaukee

Even more incredible if looking at overnight minima.

Green Bay currently 3.8F ahead of second place, and 5.4F ahead of any year at the airport observation site.

image.png.cd31601dfe90b50681f5d71574d80c6b.png

Minneapolis currently 3.3F ahead of second place, and 4.6F ahead of any year at the airport observation site.

image.png.84f6fcc3c28e8d04cc4f757fa65fd2a9.png

The average minimum temperature of 25.2F at Green Bay is 3.9F warmer than the normal winter mean temperature (21.3F).

Incredible winter in Milwaukee for palm tree growing enthusiasts, where the average minimum to date is closer to the freezing point (2.6F cooler) than it is to the second warmest (2.9F warmer), and an astounding 2.5F warmer than the normal winter mean temperature.

image.png.e7e52832d95c165ffc60c692b7768576.png

Also, of note, the 25.2F average minima at Green Bay would tie the 3rd highest ever observed in Milwaukee and the highest ever observed at MKE Airport [prior to this year], more than 100 miles to the south in a much larger urban environment.

If we look at Chicago, there's a lot of data here from non-comparative stations (downtown, lakeshore exposure).

image.png.a33dcbc9eef6eafe49c8bc174d015c99.png

But if we limit our inquiry to airport data (MDW 1942-Jan. 16, 1980; ORD Jan. 17, 1980-present), we see a much different picture. The mean mimima of 28.3F is 2.2F warmer than any year observed at one of the airport observation sites. Incredibly, the 25.2F mean minima at GRB would have been the 5th warmest ever observed at a Chicago area airport prior to this year.  This also suggests to me there are likely locations near the lakeshore downtown where the mean minima from a properly sited station may be 32F or higher this winter.

image.png.48e8ce95baea6ef255e814c1330219ef.png

There's certainly evidence to show that a lakeshore siting can have a big impact.

If we look at Cleveland, we find a mean minima of 31.3F for the winter to date.

image.png.8f26675de7e69d6a7021555c1319aa54.png

Yet Burke Lakefront Airport (BKL) on the lakeshore, and close to downtown Cleveland, registers an absolutely astounding 34.3F.

Some nice mood flakes and light wind. It’s nice watching them fall gracefully

Was surprised to see snow showers this morning, then downright heavier snow squalls this afternoon. Picked up 0.3". Its been so zzz I hadnt even checked but thought it was supposed to be sunny today. Todays snowfall marks the FIRST precip for me since the January 30th snowfall, a solid 2 weeks. What an about face after a January full of snow & rain. DTW had a T of rain a few days back, but nothing measurable since Jan 30th.

What I can glean from Ft Snelling written notes, Dec 1857 was mild, and Jan 1858 was too, but Feb turned cold. My monthly data charts confirm this.

I think thats the one. Im putting together a list of the stuff I have for Detroit from 1835 on (to when records started), and what I have for 1857-58 is Mild & open winter, “no snow and atmosphere of spring”, until February. On January 31st violets were in bloom in gardens.

Do you have a link for Fort Snelling?

0.3" of snow both here and DTW today. Based on the hit and miss nature of the heavier squalls, some areas only had a trace, but isolated areas may have had up to an inch. With today's 0.3" of snow DTW is at 19.8" on the season (17.0" in Jan) and Wyandotte 18.3" on the season (16.0" in Jan).

This has to be the worst winter ever where southeast michigan still received 14-24 inches of snow in a single calendar month lol.

Just looking at April 1820, it was very warm on some of the days. These are 1400 hr readings. It would be so nice to have daily data going back centuries. I bet we would be amazed at some of the readings from way back then.

Looking at some stats today, there's finally two stations that have crossed the 100" mark for the season... well behind average.  Herman is coming in 3rd.  I'm estimating my area has seen 80-85" now, which is probably pretty close to accurate as my totals usually come very close to Herman on any given year.  This area still running about 5 foot below average.  Pretty anemic by UP standards.

Calumet 109.8"

Keweenaw County 102.8"

Herman 91.8"

What do the least snowiest records look like around there? There’s obviously a lot of winter to go there but I would think this winter would be in the running right now.

Looks like 161.1 for the Keweenaw:
