Today will be Boston's 712th consecutive day without daily snowfall of 4" or more. That will surpass the record of 711 days that was set during February 7, 1985 through January 18, 1987 and tied during February 28, 2011 through February 7, 2013.

85-88 are my highschool years and I don't think we had a snow day for that entire time. Very reminiscent of that decade last few years.

54 inches after Feb 7th 2013 in Boston.  Most of New England though did have more than 4 inches end of Dec 2012 and Jan 2nd 87. Boston doesn't really represent much other than on the water stations.

That’s true, but it’s still a high profile location with lots of people.

November ‘12 had a good storm for us away from the water too I believe.

I don't remember that date in particular so I guess we could have had a snow day but what I remember most about the 87-88 winter was having some pretty cold temps for at least some of that winter.

I think that storm was on Veterans Day so they already had the day off and it ended predawn on the 12th. A lot of snow fell during the night of the 11th and predawn the 12th but then it was out the door.

Trudged down the backyard this afternoon to take photos of the river. Top photo is a 1/160 second exposure. It captures the turbulent state of the water flow at that instance. Some details on the bottom are completely obscured, while others come through with a decent amount of detail.

Bottom photo is a 8 second exposure. The camera sensor was collecting signal for 1,280 times as long. Integrating signal for longer "smooths", that is, averages out the turbulent flow. As a result, the perceived amount of detail in the river bed has gone up, but you might notice some areas of the first photo still offer more detail. The 8 second exposure is still a noisy image, however, the noise is spread around.

Now, there are ways to fix that, but  ....... Jesus I'm rambling, just enjoy the damn wintry river scene.

Edit: added some actual photos too.

Integrating signal over time improves visibility_compressed.jpg

@ORH_wxman GEFS is still showing the Rockies ridge spike as the Pacific trough retros. block is weakening too. this is probably the most favorable period synoptically for a region wide significant storm

Yeah agreed. I was thinking our first big shot was Feb 16-18 range but there’s definitely another window there after 2/20.

I like seeing the block north of AK too because it keeps the source region pretty cold. That helps in avoiding a totally rotted airmass with the -NAO. We had that problem in late Feb/early Mar 2010.

So it’s official then… This is officially a worse stretch than the 1980s. That is …. incredible
