Clouds - 2024

Recommended Posts

I have been slacking in sharing my clouds. The hard drive had gotten full, full and I have been burning pictures off of the harddrive instead.

On May 17th, had a good day of clouds.

A solitary popcorn cell, looking southeast as I got out to the overpass. Taken with the 23-70mm at 70mm and cropped in the camera...

The sunset was very minimalistic. Taken with the 24-70mm at 70mm...

And even more red looking to the north. Taken with the 24-70mm at 50mm and cropped in the camera...

Definitely some "A" Summers and sunsets over the last few years.. since about 2021-2022, the sky has become much more picturesque.

I would have to disagree here. I have been taking pictures of clouds for quite awhile now. Just on this computer I only go back to 2014. 6-2-2014 to be exact and the sunsets have looked the same even back then...

If I were to really dig, I could go back another ten years at least but I do not feel the urge to put in the effort.

6-19 had a humid night look to it. Not going to go back and check but it did look that way.

Some broad crepuscular rays to start. Taken with the 24-70mm at 47mm...

7-1

Back Home Again in Indiana

Of course after an 11 hour car ride, the sunset was extra special and not to be missed. I am going to over-share as it was rather nice to get back home to.

Looking SSW as I got out to the overpass and all the cirrus in the sky. The contrail and contrail shadow was rather vivid for being so far away. Taken with the 24-70mm at 35mm...

A two sided sundog (parhelia). Taken with the 24-70mm at 31mm...

The parhelia on the south side when it was at its brightest. Taken with the 24-70mm at 57mm...

And now the sunset and all the colors starting with the whites. Taken with the 24-70mm at 57mm...

Only extremely behind now. 7-17 has a nice variety for the sunset.

Looking WNW pre-sunset. The broad and kind of undefined crepuscular rays are not really that exciting but they way to top of the cloud bank is delineated looks cool to me. Taken ith the 24-70mm at 70mm...

8G3A7396.thumb.JPG.e72d47d0ca3383eb93bcac1f16edcd99.JPG

Looking southwest around sunset so you have some context on the last and better shot. Taken with the 16-35mm at 16mm...

7-24 was just a proto-typical summer sunset.

Lots of haze/humidity made the sky milky. And most of the summer the worst of the smoke stayed off to the west as you can see on the horizon. The scattering of alto-cumulus put just enough oompah into the sky to make it worth taking a fe clicks. Taken with the 24-70mm at 42mm...

7-28 ended up being fairly special.

Storms were exiting the area around sunset. When I got to the firehouse the virga and crepuscular rays were just starting in a fury. Taken with the 24-70mm at 39mm...

8G3A0509.thumb.JPG.9db26ae30d787ce079abcb10739ff43c.JPG

I thought maybe some special might happen and I wanted to get out in the country where I could have unencumbered views all around the compass.  So I took the time to relocate. Here it is a bit later ith the sun bending around a silo out in the countryside. Taken with the 24-70 at 55mm...

8G3A0611.thumb.JPG.6614bafdf149d1cde88f2a42a92120d3.JPG

Good thing I had clear east views also as there as this rainbow arc. Taken with the 24-70mm at 65mm...

8G3A0645.thumb.JPG.e8898b0fb4d59bad85616b00341bdfc1.JPG

And now for the showstopper and the last image of the evening. A full on orange rainbow at sunset. Taken with the 16-35mm at 18mm...

8-1 was a study on cloud shadows.

Started off right at sunset with this cute little shadow all by itself. Taken with the 24-70mm at 57mm...

8G3A2252.thumb.JPG.c54a822380def60bec93c750884853da.JPG

A bit later things got more numerous but a bit more diffuse. Taken with the 24-70mm at 57mm...

8G3A2387.thumb.JPG.7f7472d845bdaa2cdfa3f7e92a7cbc67.JPG

It got really wild by the time the orange/red started creeping overhead. The shadows got even more defined as the Sun rounded down farther west way over the horizon. Taken with the 16-35mm at 20mm...

8-20 has plenty of cirrus and high clouds to shoot.

Started off with a nice sundog (parhelia) on the south side of the Sun. Taken with the 24-70mm at 50mm...

8-24 was a good example to stay for the last erg of color.

Sunset was rather underwhelming. Taken with the 24-70mm at 24mm...

But if I waited for the last dregs, and I did, sometimes it can be worth it. Taken with the 24-70mm at 47mm...
