Clouds - 2024

Time to fire up a new thread for the New Year. Thanks for all the views in 2023. And as usual will be deleting 2023 as I go along to make room for the new images.

Starting off the new year with a sunrise.  Can not tell but it was -6F when these were imaged. I must be a little messed up in the head to be out and taking these. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

First sunset of the year. It warmed up to a whole whopping 20 degrees so it was time to get back at shooting evening colors.

The sunset this evening.

I did not think the sunset would amount to much. But there was some clouds to the west. So I took the camera out to the country to get a good and clear view to the far west. Did not bring the tripod though, as I was not expecting much. So these are handheld through the car window. Blame any soft image on the photographer, not the camera.

Some faint late-afternoon iridescence in the cumulus. There was some nice cirrus inaction going on also that I could not see from the glare. Glad I took the image and was able to see it.

I could see on the visual satellite this afternoon that the edge of this departing system was approaching the Illinois/Indiana border. I thought there might be a chance at some post sunset color so I went out in the country to make sure I had as clear a view to the west as I could get. I guessed right. There was a brief red flash but I was not expecting a sun pillar also.

After work I was mowing the lawn and noticed that the gaps in the clouds was highlighting the altocumulus in a nice way. If I cannot have color, some texture is the sky is all I need.

Was out for the sunrise this morning. My usual morning spot with open eastern views, the county fairgrounds, had a dog show this weekend and a dog run set up where I usually set up. So I had to head to a different spot.  Tried the southside park. Have never tried a sunset there yet dso this was a first. Also I forgot the 24-70mm at home on the table so I had to make do with the 16-35mm.

THe reds. Taken with the 16-35mm at 35mm...

I had forgotten about how good the 16-35 was at making diffraction spikes due to its aperture construction. Always adds a little pop to an image. Taken with the 16-35mm at 35mm...

This evening was a departing system sunset. Everything as eroding from the top down and not quite as much west to east. The clouds were really hauling also. And my mania for trying to get the colors right, I did not have the camera set to stun. So the blurry clouds are all on me. Taken with the 24-70mm at 44mm...

I am going to over-share the sunset this evening. It just happened to be one of those.

A departing system timed out perfect even though I had to be camped out under the umbrella for the first part of it. It was worth it.

As the color started. And normally I would be thrilled with this much. But it was only the appetizer. Taken with the 24-70mm at 39mm...
