Almost 1/3 odds now for Hickory to net more than 6 inches. We are going to riot soon calculus1

I know! I am afraid to mention anything to anyone about our chances. Don’t wanna jinx it. I’m thankful the weather has been seasonal, at least, this winter. And now, it’s looking like some true winter cold is on the way. Just got to time the precipitation right.

On a related note, I feel the pain, @wncsnow , but I’m not quite to the doom-posting level that you have reached. I suppose I had the benefit of watching snow fall for an hour or so back in early December. That was such a nice treat, even though it only amounted to a minor dusting.

It's a mixture of doom posting and the enjoyment of getting people riled up. And if you latch on to no snow it's usually going to always win out here. Especially in the last 12 years. We have had less than an inch of snow in 5 of the past 12 years.

For the record, I do agree that it's going to get cold. Possibly below zero even here. I want to see the southern stream looking healthier in future runs to get excited. If we are depending on the northern stream, we are threading needles at best.

I am with you on that. There are so many ways that this can still slip away from us. I do like the fact that the cold air looks solid. The timing of individual storms and their track is still up for grabs.

With that being said, you got to like our chances. I can't remember a time, in recent history, when all the indices lined up just right for a KU winter storm in our neck of the woods. I am sure we are going to see some wild model runs (good and bad) in the coming days. Buckle up .... going to be wild.

Taking a deeper dive into the Jan 6/7th storm. For us, this screams icing potential with a front end thump of Snow/Sleet. Damming high building into southern Ontario and a cutter. I think it’s this storm that *could set us up better a few days later. As it cuts, it dislodges frigid air into our region.

We used to get a lot of snow to sleet to ZR storms.

And, they made for excellent sledding conditions. I remember several of those types of storms growing up in the 80s and 90s in Lenoir. 4-6 inches of snow, followed by a half inch of sleet, and then a glaze of ice makes for fantastic sledding, as I recall.

The best storms around here as a a child (80's kid here) had a top of sleet or zr. Which worked great in the neighbor I grew up in.

But the best is when it remains below or close to freezing at last two days after with full sun. The melting that occurs makes the best night sledding which is the best kind IMO.

Folks on the other forum are already dooming. It’s what happens when everyone’s snow starved. But, I also just haven’t been convinced by the picking pattern.

Rule of thumb, excitement should be limited to 24 hours out of any non liquid falling from the sky. That use to be 48 hours for me but over the years it has changed.

The carpet has been pulled to many times. Let the rollercoaster continue.

Bring it on! I am cautiously optimistic for January, while still telling all my friends and family that it can no longer snow in Hickory: It’s climatologically impossible. :D

I think I'm going to start telling people this as well

32.4 here.  I put a couple butts on to smoke last night around 10. Forecast was for a low of around 40. Had to get up at 4:30 and add some more fire to keep things moving along to schedule.  (I've got a handy wifi app that monitors pit and meat temp and notifies me via the phone when attention is needed).

My standing joke about telling someone I'm gonna smoke a couple pork butts is that I'm gonna need some pretty big papers.  :D

Happy New Year Foothills crew. It's been a hell of a year for most of us. I still have silt and mud from the Catawba River in my backyard. Finally got rid of most of the debris. Every day driving to work I see destruction still. Bridges out, mangled trailers and houses. I think we've all gone a bit numb to it.

I hope 2025 is prosperous for all of us in the snow department and we avoid all major natural disasters!
