BlunderStorm
Today was a nearly perfect 24 hours of snowfall. While lacking in some of the stronger bursts seen further south it made up for it with consistency. At no point was mixing an issue. As of midnight I officially report 6.2 inches for the day. An extra inch overnight wouldn't surprise me. It's been fun.
Stovepipe
I've never seen anything like this in my life. Somehow it's still managing to snow on this glacier at 12:30am.

Stovepipe
Well, with zero radar returns overhead we're still spitting out steady fine ice pellets at 21 degrees. This is certainly one for the record books.
Uncle Nasty
I know ya'll will think I've lost my mind for saying this , but on my couch in my peripheral vision , I thought I saw a flash of light out of the south/southeast facing window in my house. I wrote it off as a light from Miller Industries up the ridge behind me. I kept looking, and 1 or 2 minutes later, I saw it again. I saw it 1 more time after that a minute later. It was a purplish/greenish color. I don't think there's any way it could be lightning, but I have no clue what else it could be. We are currently sitting at 28° and freezing rain. On the other side of Miller is interstate 75, so I have no clue what it could have been other than a few lightning strikes. I walked outside on the patio and filmed for a few minutes, and of course, nothing else happened. I will say the ground is now a sheet of ice, and the trees are glistening. Is it possible there was enough energy in the area to have a few strikes of lightning, or am I losing my mind? On a side note, I considered a blown transformer, but it was too high in the sky to be that. Thoughts? Edit to add: I added a screenshot of the radar at the time I saw it. It "looks" like there might be something down in Georgia in the yellow area that "could" be the culprit. My weather station is showing zero lightning strikes .Sent from my SM-S916U using Tapatalk
Jed33
Now for the cold part of this storm. GFS going for sub -10F tonight in the areas of the valley that had the heaviest snow. With the coldest around Knoxville of -14!!!! MRX is saying -1 to -2 or so for most of the heavy snowpack area. If we go lower than -10 I’d be surprised, but I guess we will see. I’ve only seen lower than -10F one or two times in my life, and that wasn’t anywhere I lived at the time.
Knoxtron
It's still snowing/sleeting, no idea on the snow depth but we picked up another few inches overnight 36 hrs of snowfall! Now to keep the pipes from freezinf

Wurbus
Nothing on the radar, but getting a nice light snow this morning. Temp is 14 degrees, this cold air is really squeezing all the moisture out of the air that it can.
Maestrorr
Thanks to all the posters. I don't have enough knowledge to contribute to the tracking discussions, but I can at least contribute to the obs. May have picked up an inch overnight, and it is steady light snow this morning. There is enough of a glaze atop the snow that our 7 lb. dog can walk across most of it without sinking if she doesn't jump. This has been a wonderful event for me. Reminded me of my days in Kansas City and Louisville, KY.
BhamParker
Getting some nice light snow right now and it’s accumulating nicely with temps below freezing. We picked up and inch or two over night and everything is white. .

Bigbald
There is a thin line of a flizzard that is causing havoc on the roads, I am guessing the front pushing through and squeezing out the last remaining moisture. It is nearly parrellel to I 81.

It is nearly parrellel to I 81. That’s a really common area to get a band of snow to set up after these powerhouse arctic fronts push through. In this area it is often referred to as the “Bay’s Mountain Effect”. It is not uncommon to see this terrain enhancement in that area and there is another area northwest of Sevierville that does it too. Looked like it happened this morning as well.

Uncle Nasty
Off topic a little, but we are thinking about having lunch at Turkey Creek. Watching all the local Knoxville Tv stations today, it looks like the interstate is fine driving north on 75. I'm just curious if anyone here has any local knowledge if anything is open. I've already called Smoky Mountain Brewery and Connors. I can't get anyone on the phone, which tells me they are probably closed and haven't updated their message. I am really wanting a T Rex pizza. Carvers Gap
Lots of snow showers this morning as the front is finally clearing this area. Everything froze this morning as yesterday the surface pretty much stayed above freezing for the entire event. Front must have finally pushed through after 3:00AM. Kingsport is a mess this morning, especially secondary roads. Stone Drive was bad in spots. I would guess our ratios were 8:1 or less. We sat right on the rain/snow line. We probably finished slightly above 6" of snow. Secondary roads are mostly a frozen combination of ice/slush/snow. Crazy storm. I kept looking to see it change over to rain, and it did not. We finally did get a bit of drizzle around midnight, but meaningful precip had moved out by then. I had also wondered if my area got lollipopped after reading returns. It looks like all of Stone Drive had similar amounts to my area. Pretty good thump for a lot of Kingsport w/ the south side of town likely suffering through mix and rain unfortunately.

Carvers Gap
Portions of Interstates 81 and 26 have been closed temporarily in Kingsport as there have been numerous car accidents. Not sure those are closed due to authorities closing the interstate, or if it is accidents closing them. Either way, multiples sections and lanes of the interstate are impassible at this writing around Kingsport. These sections include decent elevation changes. https://www.wjhl.com/news/local/tdot-i-81-i-26-closed-in-areas-due-to-multiple-crashes/

BhamParker
I shared these in the mountain thread but will share here as well. I measured 2-3 inches this morning after the morning snow was wrapping up. We still are getting some flurries now but this morning was beautiful. We would have had 8+ easy if we didn’t mix all day long yesterday. The heavy snow from 4-6 yesterday was something I haven’t seen before up here but we would always lose it once we went to lighter returns and that hurt the accumulation part of this storm. Still a beautiful snow and my third consecutive chase of MLK weekend up this way. There is just something about this weekend. Enjoy the photos! .

Yeah I measured 8 to 9 in places in the yard, though hard to tell since some sleet and rain had compacted it. Also found some deep pockets of 10 to 11. Drifts? Anyway, Pretty cool storm. Ended up with a final half inch last night to recoat what I had cleaned up too.
tnweathernut
I put this in the wrong thread and just wanted to move it to the correct thread.... Congrats to everyone who saw a fantastic snow!! This one wasn’t what some of us wanted, but it’s always fascinating to track and see what goes right vs what goes wrong and which models handle things the best. Those models showing warming banked up against the west side of apps were correct, even into much of Washington County. The HRRR and RAP did well. The ARW never found the warm layer and was the most wrong, IMO. Of course the globals in close were in the ARW boat from within 48 hours, showing the NE TN getting hammered. This is to be expected for global models. They just don’t have the resolution needed to score a victory. The RGEM also struggled, and while showing some of the warming, didn’t have it correct as far away from the mountains as what verefied. In JC we switched back and forth almost all day after a good start to the system. We had a heavy dusting and roads were covered by lunch. Then we flipped to heavy rain and back and forth between rain and snow until around 4:30-5:00. We managed about 3” of slop with heavier bands into the evening, but didn’t make it to below freezing until early this morning. When I went to work we had freezing drizzle and most of what fell on the roads had largely melted. I live north and west of Johnson City proper, and thought I was far enough away from the mountains I could stay all snow. Although I didn’t get shut out, I relearned a lesson I already knew. Never count out thermal profile problems in northeast TN.
