@BxEnginewhile I have 3.3" measured on the snow board if I just measure snow on the ground it's closer to 4" so I should go with the 4"? Always round up, correct? :bike:

Yeah but my grass stopped growing 7 months ago so i couldnt do my tried and true method of measuring from the actual dirt to the top of the snow sitting on the long grass this year.

Mine had stopped as well but I put down some winterizer and lime right before the alleged by some "blip in the drought" and it started growing again. As a result it's the longest I've ever had it for winter.

Besides the time of year, what I'm really enjoying with this snowfall is that there is cold air streaming in behind the storm. It seems like most of our snowfalls these days come with warmer temps on its heels.

Good northwest wind with that Canadian air and a low of 11 tonight helps with the Christmas mood. Oops the snow cover too!

3.5” for the snow total.

Good morning everyone - Dec 22.

A white Christmas is assured for most of us in e PA/NJ northward to Canada.

Tuesday morning Midnight-Noon I78 in PA-NJ northward. A 3 hour period of snow deposits 0.5-1.5" needing road treatments for reducing slippery travel. Normal manageable winter driving habits - caution advised.   Roads frozen from this weekends bitter cold.

Next events: Day after Christmas (26th): e PA, northern NJ- Southeast NYS. Snow possible with 1/2-3" potential but model uncertainty whether this occurs so it's not a given yet. It may begin Christmas night? Also this could also extend to CT.

I84 corridor northward 28th-30th: Periods of Ice mixed wintry possible but lots of uncertainty. Could be just rain.

Maps added are the generalized NWS 5AM snow forecast that informed their early morning products. Also a map of the Blend of Models snowfall which is a good start for what should occur early Christmas Eve. AND--- if you're interested---a map of soil temps 2 inches below the surface in NYS. Interesting that its near zero on the surface, but above freezing 2" below ground.

The warm soil temps will have a significant effect on snowpack retention if we don't get a lot in the fairly near future. We got rain but not enough, as referenced by WDrag comment elsewhere, so there's a lot of warm air in the soil below the wet level and now it's insulated with a (thin) frozen cap and snow so it'll stay warm.

Too early to be sure of this...but 28th-29th is flagging mixed and icy, significant for travel on untreated surfaces. See attachment.blue area.   GFS looks like it's missing this but maybe I'm relying too much on other models.  Anyways, WSSI-P has it for now. We'll see if it hold.

Icing coming to I84 the 28th... it's a start to what may turn out to be an interesting NY eve.

WSSI P- low prob minimal impact ice on the 28th (image) led by the RGEM (a typically warmer than USA model).

EPS mean SD change has .1 to NYC NY eve. Might be a chilly rain to sleet?  LONG shot. I'll watch how far se that second short wave digs across PA/MD (neg tilt) and how much low level marginally cool air is left behind on the 30th-31st.

Good Saturday morning everyone, it's Dec 28.

I84 corridor through 930AM: Icy pavers and driveways where it's 32-33F will become ice free around 930AM. Treated roads are just fine and most decks-wires are ice free. Just be a little careful stepping outside early this.morning. Most of the icy conditions were in Warren-Sussex and Orange Counties here near the tristate corner of PA/NYS-NJ with spotty ice in ne PA and interior CT.

Sunday-Monday I84 and OF: A mild and occasionally foggy snow melting rain will occur with temps into the 40s and maybe the 50s at times.

Later Jan 1-3 I84 corridor mainly hilly terrain: Bands of snow showers will cause brief periods of scattered hazardous travel on untreated roads.

Jan 6-11: I-84 corridor and possibly the I95 corridor from NC northward to Boston: One or two storms should deposit widespread hazardous amounts of snow and ice. The first storm around Jan 6-7 should be mainly limited to the I84 corridor northward. A second storm toward Jan 10ish could involve the I95 corridor from NC to MD NYC-BOS?

I went out right after the rain started and the air was already noticeably warmer than it was around 10. The rain was a lot warmer than the air and didn't even leave a glaze on an upside-down metal canister I use in the garden. I'm sure it glazed stone ground surfaces but probably not for long. Already warm rain falling through quickly warming air got warmer and the ground wasn't cold enough to beat it.

Yup, snowcover is fading fast.

Good Monday morning all!

My thinking on all that is coming:

Entire I84 corridor Thursday: Windy with a few gusts around 45 MPH and possibly a few flurries. Isolated power outages expected, mainly NYS and southern New England.

Entire I84 corridor Friday afternoon-Saturday morning: Blustery cold with scattered snow showers - dustings to possibly 1", mainly the hills. This also begins what could be at least a 10 day stretch of continuous subfreezing temps in the hills, only barely above freezing in the valleys during the afternoons. Pond ice should be thick enough for safe ice fishing by mid month.

Jan 6-11 Especially I-84 corridor - and possibly the I95 corridor from NC northward to Boston: One or two storms should deposit widespread hazardous amounts of snow and ice with travel delays. The first storm around Jan 6-7 should be mainly limited to the I84 corridor south through PA-NJ. A second storm toward Jan 10ish could involve the I95 corridor from NC to MD NYC-BOS. This Jan 6-11 segment is consistent with what we've seen for a few days although targeted areas differ dependent on the modeling.

Have a good day monitoring-anticipating.  Walt

Good Tuesday morning everyone, it is Dec 31. Not much change since yesterday.

January will be a seasonably cold or colder than normal month with potential for long lasting snow on the ground once it starts accumulating again in VA/MD/PA/NJ northward. (Added VA/MD since yesterday)

Please see your segment and date for attempted planning.

Poconos and nw Hills of CT: Periods of rain-drizzle NY Day will probably change to a little wet snow after 4PM--possibly a slippery inch on untreated surfaces by 9PM January 1. Caution advised.

Remainder I84 corridor Wednesday evening: Rain showers may mix with wet snow with possibly a slightest coating above 1000 feet-nw NJ in particular.

Entire I84 corridor Thursday morning-midday: Windy with a few gusts around 45 MPH and possibly a few flurries. Isolated power outages expected

Entire I84 corridor Friday afternoon-Saturday morning: Blustery cold with scattered snow showers - dustings to possibly 1", mainly the hills. This also begins what will probably be at least a 10 day stretch of continuous subfreezingtemps in the hills, only barely above freezing in the valleys during the afternoons. Pond ice should be thick enough for safe ice fishing-skating by mid month.

This Jan 6-11 segment is consistent with what we've seen for many days although targeted areas differ dependent on the modeling. Make some plans for travel adjustments, especially PA/NJMD/VA next Monday or Tuesday.

Happy New Year Day morning everyone, it is 2025.

A wind advisory is in effect for most of the northeast USA later today emphasizing scattered gusts 45-55 MPH, especially tomorrow morning.

This afternoon Poconos and nw Hills of CT: Periods of rain-drizzle will change to a little wet snow sometime this afternoon-possibly a slippery inch on untreated surfaces by evening. A few snow showers may linger overnight. Manageable but winter driving caution advised.

Tonight remainder I84 corridor: Rain showers may mix with wet snow with possibly a slightest coating above 1000 feet-nw NJ in particular.

Jan 2 Entire I84 corridor Thursday morning-midday: Windy with a few gusts around 45 MPH and possibly scattered dustings from snow showers--especially CT. Isolated power outages expected, mainly NYS and southern New England where gusts may reach 50-55 MPH.

Jan 3-4 Northeast USA from DC to Baltimore to Philly and NYC Friday afternoon-Saturday morning: Blustery cold with scattered snow showers - dustings to possibly 1". Melting on pavement during the daylight hours but anything after dark can stick. This also begins what will probably be at least 10 day stretch of continuous subfreezing temps in the hills, only barely above freezing in the valleys-cities during the afternoons. Pond ice should be thick enough for safe ice fishing-skating by mid month.
