The entire county saw a freeze to hard freeze in some places last week. Why would a frost advisory even be necessary? Good point, we’ve had a frost advisory and a freeze warning last week. To the best of my knowledge, once you have a freeze warning, there were no additional advisories issued. The freeze warning basically states that the growing season has ended. IrishRob17
10 hours ago, CPcantmeasuresnow said: The logical follow-up question is of course the following. Has the first frost, freeze and hard freeze ever occurred on the same date? Low of 31 here this morning. As to your question, using the NWS definition of first frost (low of 36-32) no it hasn't. Using my first visible frost records then yes, I recorded all three on the same date on 10/13/2012 with a low of 27. The NWS first frost that season was 10/12/2012 with 33 at 11:49pm. So all four did happen on the same night.

Yeah, I heard that one is expanding and agree that the ones that have sprung up have been put down quickly so far aside from that one.

gravitylover
Frost again this morning at the low points on the property but not in the backyard where the garden is. I'm still pulling beautiful, sweet tomatoes and strawberries every day! Yum.

IrishRob17
.10 yesterdays brings me to .24 for the month which will go down as my driest month. My previous driest recorded month was February 2002 with .40 when I lived in New Windsor.
gravitylover
Between the .01 last night and the following 7 hours of fog the things that are still growing got very happy. The lawn is lush, soft and green, the tomatoes and berries are flowering and putting on new fruit and the bees came back Unfortunately so did the mosquitoes 75° with a thin overcast. I'll take it! I'm tempted to falsify the records by 0.7 degrees just to achieve the elusive first freeze/hard freeze on the same day. I could not live with that 28.5, would ruin my whole week. As I was updating my spreadsheet I realized that I did hit 28 on 10/17, so that goes down as my first hard freeze. The reason for the discrepancy is that I was out of town and looking at my Davis WeatherLink online which archives every 5 minutes but the console refreshes at a much smaller rate, every 2.5 seconds. I use the console for all of my records. So while I hit 28 for under five minutes that is the low temp that goes in the books.
gravitylover
And I just keep rolling along without getting close to a freeze and with only one or maybe two frosts. I had fresh strawberries on my waffle this morning!

The Accu Weather 45 day long range, for my portion of the sub tropic coastal plain, goes out to December 16th. Its lowest minimum for the balance of November is 34 and for December 33. If the present trends continue it may take Santa to end the growing season in the postage stamp. Now, my friends, you know how much of a life I have if I’m looking at a 45 day long range forcast. Stay well all, as always …
