I was in Knoxville that winter. KCS went to extended school days so that they didn't have to go Saturdays. tnweathernut Posted January 6 Share Posted January 6 96 was the last time i remember snow on snow and significant snow on the ground for 2 straight weeks, with snow mounds all over the parking lots around the city. If I remember correct, we got it going by having a heavy rain change to heavy snow. You guys had something like 28-30 inches of snow that winter. A single event 12-15 inch snow was widespread over Knox Co, and the Anderson/Union border having close to 20 from the Feb 2nd storm. I actually made a ton of money Feb-May that year. So much snow and ice got into gutters it caused roof and ceiling damage. I stayed working in Halls around that time. One of the best I've seen in my life time and I'm 68 yrs old. With that particular storm, the mets were not predicting snow, but heavy ice. In inches. The thought of it icing that much was scary. That evening it started sleeting and 30 min later changed to all snow and stayed snow. Never had any ice thank goodness. Here in town we got about 18 inches and I have never seen snow fall that heavily, and straight down cause there was no wind. Businesses closed and people were walking instead of driving. The streets were literally snow packed and it snowed off and on for two weeks. We did a LOT of sledding! Anyway, sorry to be so long with my post, but it truly was a magical time. Somehow it didn't make MRX's list of memorable winter events. I went to the library and found what the local newspaper had documented, and I also found something online about it being an unusual event for Anderson Co, but that was scant. Folks talk about the blizzard of '93 but never the snowstorms of '96. The blizzard in my town was incredible because of the thundersnow and we did get several inches, but as I recall it was gone in a few days. Of course it was mid March so that's to be expected! Ice, sleet, snow and absolutely frigid air in its wake. Rockwood has missing data, but 8 inches of snow was recorded and then another 1.08 QPF fell with temps in the 20s. Lenoir City had 8 inches of snow officially recorded but also has missing data. It was his off day and their date night. He had to walk and got stuck on the highway many a time. lol He talks about those winters often. That was in Anderson County.
