weatherbo
MQT: In total of 6 monthly and 57 daily temperature and precipitation records were broken or tied during 2023 at our office in Negaunee Twp where records date back to 1961. Five of the monthly records and 35 of the daily records were associated with temperatures warmer than previously observed. Only three of the 35 warm daily temperature records occurred during meteorological summer (Jun - Aug), which is consistent with global observations of nighttime and cool season temperatures warming more rapidly. Despite the warmth, Upper Michigan’s northern location resulted in 10 of the 19 precipitation records being associated with snowfall including the new May daily snowfall record of 19.8 inches! I think the crazier part about this other than 3 of the 6 are in the last 11 years, is that 2023 did it while not really even getting hot in the summer. That is more concerning than anything if you ask me.

Remarkable, since it just doesn't stand out in my mind for sustained anomalous warmth like 1988 (I was too young to remember, but my parents do as that was the summer I got sick on a camping trip with my grandparents and they assumed it was heat-related at first, but I ended up having surgery to remove a [non-malignant] tumor at age 2), 1995 and 2012 do. Probably because around here you can be +10 to 15 in January-April, and October-December and it still feels cold to pleasant instead of "hot."
