There's been a large increase in mass shootings at the same time we've seen a steep decline in gun homicides....there's definitely something deeper going on. In 1985, you could buy an uzi relatively easily, but we didn't have people spraying Walmart customers every few months. I'm not a gun nut and have no problem banning an AR-15....but that would probably only be a small piece of the solution.

I think a lot of these nuts snap and want to go out with a literal bang knowing that they’re going to get 15 minutes of national/world media fame if their hit count is high enough. There’s been an exponentially growing copycat element since Columbine as well. When you build up enough hate in you to want to end it and/or kill this is the New Year’s fireworks finale version of it.

Horrific.

This country has got to get very tough again on crime….give the police all their power back,  and all their abilities back.  If not….then unfortunately the Wild West will be making a big come back.

The "Wild West" when it was just 6 shooters wasn't nearly so wild as now...

Yeah probably....agreed on more copycats....but what caused that sentiment to increase so much in the past 25 years versus, say, 1980 or 1985 when we could go buy machine guns and go out like Arnold in Commando?

Increased nihilism? Depression? Finding the root of that behavioral change or mental outlook is probably where a lot of the solutions arise.

I asked that already…but you didn’t do anything. Now you’re telling me after a poster tells me what to watch?

I’m telling everyone to take the typical political arguments to the OT side of the forum. I don’t even want it in banter here. I was letting the updates go in here last night, but I’d prefer to keep the majority of the other talk off of the weather forums.

I couldn’t agree more.

The nonsense is a society where a machine gun is at the beck and call of every warped, troubled soul.

This is false.  Since the mid 1980s it has been extremely difficult to acquire a legal full-auto weapon.  I'm not familiar with all the red tape but it includes a deep-dive character check and a stiff fee to ATF, among other things.  That said:

1.  I've no idea whether this shooter's weapon was full-auto or semi-auto.  It looks like a tactical rifle (a.k.a. "assault weapon"), one on which various attachments - telescopic scope, night-vision scope, laser aim point, rangefinder, etc - can be quickly installed/removed.
2.  A semi-auto with a 30-shot clip might be more deadly than a full-auto, though this trained former military man may have sufficient work with full-auto to hold the barrel down.  A friend used to own, legally, a full-auto mini-14 and a 40-shot clip.  I got to fire a full clip once, and on 3-shot burst I was unable to hold the muzzle down, such that shots 2,3 were off-target high.
3.  My Remington Model 76 pump in .30-06 is probably far more powerful than what the killer was shooting, but my rifle's max is 5 cartridges not 30, and the small but fast .223 that's most common on his kind of weapon is plenty deadly and likely able to penetrate the Kevlar safety vest.

Correct-- "machine gun" is a misrepresentation but the legality of auto/semi-auto weapons and the large magazines allowed produces more or less the same horrific results in mass shootings.

Social media........The downfall of humanity. Turned most in to unsympathetic selfish opinionated arseholes. Causes folks to be edgy and abrasive. That ain't going away. Snif'

Couldn’t agree more…and this is why I have zero social media accounts.  I’m just here for the weather discussion, and that’s it.

Anger and hate from socio economic and political ideologies, which fuel a big chunk of mass murders, is not mental illness. We don’t view international terrorists as mentally ill. We blame religion extremism and the like but somehow domestic terrorism is immediately tied to it. Again, this guy apparently was mentally ill so the application is appropriate.

This sucks anyway you slice it. Unfortunately it’s just another day in America.

Not political at all. Guy is a mental case. All these shooters are deranged. Equating international terrorists with single mentally ill mass murders? You have completely lost it dude.

Here you go Steve:

https://mwhealth.org/stories/policy-watch-mass-shootings-mental-illness-what-the-research-tells-us

Yes, someone who commits mass murder is clearly emotionally unstable, but a study by the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit of 63 active shooters found that only a quarter of those had a diagnosis of mental illness. Other studies have found that mass shooters are not acting out of impulse but have deep grievances and anger that drive their actions.

You and I will never agree on any of this Luke…that’s why I suggested take all this to banter…but folks are refusing to do that.

And all of this has everything to do with soft on crime…that’s the root issue. And no one is suggesting an authoritarian state at all.  But The police have systematically been defunded, and their power has been decreased to a frightening degree. If you’re gonna state your points, and make your comments ..I will state and make mine. But again, we will respectfully disagree on this whole idea.

I will not respond any further on any of this. I feel very badly for Lewiston, and for Jeff, this is absolutely horrible.

This guy is in the military and had no prior criminal record. This has absolutely nothing to do with being “soft on crime”. It doesn’t even make any sense.

If he committed prior crimes and was then RELEASED then I would agree. That did not happen here.

Depends what mental case is defined as.

Mental case means someone who acts without reason and has a legit mental disorder. Terrorists often act in a way that may be rational to accomplish their goals, even if their goals are crazy. They knew what they were doing and did it for a reason. That is not a mental case. It  is a bad person with bad motives.

there is a reason that all criminals cannot use the insanity defense. People do bad things often when they are not insane…

Here’s the deal…

Let’s keep the talk to updates and post them in the banter thread only. Let this stay weather for those who want to talk weather. If you want to get into more political type posts then take it to the mass killing thread in OT.

Capisce?

While I agree that access to guns should be greatly limited, especially when mental health is involved. I've seen people claiming that mental health is not the cause of the increase in mass shootings, but when I look the gun violence archive (or some similar dataset), I see a significant portion of mass shootings were committed by shooters with mental health issues. So I agree that addressing mental health is a large part of the equation. I mean... we don't want people with uncontrolled (or even controlled) mental health problems to have access to AR-15s, do we?

So tragic for people of Maine. Stay safe for you folks up there.

And this is having an effect on me, too. Every time I go to the grocery store, the first thing I do when I enter is look for all of the exits in the back. :(

EDIT: My apologies @dendrite I didn't see your post to move things to banter when I typed this. Feel free to move my post there.
