Another big Sept rain event between roughly midnight Friday morning and midnight Sunday morning (bulk 9/29-30/2023)

Two day event total here = .99".  Glad my area missed out on the excessive totals.  Just don't need any additional rainfall for a while.  Nice to go into Fall / Winter with wet ground but I've kind of had enough.

Its all about getting federal money for recovery. They issue SOE's when there is a stiff breeze these days, its ridiculous. I mean they are even issuing them for 6-10" snow storms, they never did that years ago. Its getting out of hand IMO. Issue a State of Emergency when its truly needed, no wonder why the public doesn't take it seriously.

Also added NYS Mesonet. 

JFK highest daily rainfall 'ever' since POR began 1948 (8.05"), and CP #9 wettest day at 5.48 with POR back to 1869.

Will add a little summary to the originating section post tomorrow morning when all data in.

 

Added 18z/28 HRRR for comparison.  HRRR probably the best inside of 36 hours.

That's how I feel too. I was glad to miss out on the big amounts with this event (1.38" here) because we've had more than enough the last few months.

I am glad that the rain came in time to help the gardening season. I was worried it was gonna be a bad season because May and most of June were so dry. It appeared we were heading into a drought, but thankfully the wet pattern started at the end of June. Just in time. It ended up being a great gardening season with some of the best crops ever. I'm still getting a ton of eggplants right now. 

But enough is enough. I was rooting hard for all our heavy rain/storm events this summer, but I finally got burned out on it. I didn't look forward to these last 2 events. The ground has been saturated for a long time and we don't need any more rain. Hopefully we're done with significant rain for awhile.

Yeah, I am thinking there there were spots in the 5 towns and Far Rockaway with around 11.00” since the radar estimate in Valley Stream was around 2.50” too low.

The Bronx River crested at 4.99 feet at the New York Botanical Garden. That was about 6" below the crest achieved from the remnants of Hurricane Ida in September 2021. The River remained at flood stage for about 12 hours.

Yeah, it’s not easy living on a barrier island these days. I got flooded out of my basement apartment in Long Beach by Agnes in June of 1972. We found a new apartment about a year later and settled on no more basement apartments. The rest of the 70s were relatively quiet for flooding outside the West End. My friend with a basement in his house picked up flooding with the spring 1983 deluge. Then the record 5.15”in under 2 hours shut down our drinking water during June 1995. Flooding situation was pretty quiet for another 10 years until the October 2005 record event which flooded out most LB basements. Followed up a while later by the record 10” in less than 12 hours on 8-14-11. Then the Irene storm surge flooding a few weeks later. Then the off the charts extreme Sandy tidal surge flooding in October 2012. I moved out of LB by chance months before Sandy hit. So not sure about all the local flood specifics after that time.

Me too, moved out of Lb in June 2012, I had 6” of water in the apartment during Irene, so likely several feet during sandy.

with this current event the handicap women who lives below me in lynbrook had 5’ of water. I lost most of my pride and joy veggie garden, which is trivial in comparison. I’m currently at my dads in wantagh dealing with his basement as he’s in Spain. Not a fun 2 days for me, after dealing with flooding for 12 hours at work on the uws yesterday. Unfortunately this is our new normal.
