Morning lows were again below average today with many lower elevation spots reaching the 50's again. Today will be our 7th straight (but last) below normal day with highs topping out in the low to mid 80's. Temps should reach the 90's starting Wednesday for many areas in the county. In fact we could see our first "heat wave" (3 consecutive days over 90) since July 19-21, 2020. In fact in the last 20 years we have only recorded 10 "heat waves" in total here in Chesco! This heat will be short lived as the pattern will shift again by next weekend and we look to go back to near normal to below pattern through the first 10 days of August.
Records for today: High 98 (1991) / Low 51 (1983) / Rain 4.04" (1946)

I'll be working outside in the heat all week again in NJ, but at least this time it won't be in Newark. Apologies to anyone who has to live there (or between there and Jersey City), but I'm sure glad I don't.

Hot day here today, peaked at 92 and change, but once the back deck was in shade, it was actually pretty pleasant to do some grilling. What I'm kind of amazed at is how I still need to water my garden when there's still a couple of inches of water in the bottom of my basement dry well. Sheesh.

Thats evaportranspiration for you! What part of reading are you in ? Is the soil sandy?

Didn't get to 90 as a high yesterday (only made it to 89) but it felt hotter though with the dp having crept up a bit.

Bottomed out at 69 this morning and am currently getting light rain, not enough to tip the bucket yet but heavier bands appear to be advecting up from the SW and will see if any make it up here. So far it has wet the pavement and I rolled the umbrella down so plants nearby can get a little.

Temp is 73 with dp 68.

Some showers moved across Southern Chester County this AM with some additional showers possible through later this PM. Our temperatures should rise to near normal for the first time in over a week. Our chances for a heat wave for Chesco appear to be fading as it appears we may just miss 90 on Wednesday especially across the relatively higher terrain. However, both Thursday and Friday should exceed 90 before we cool back to near normal by the end of next weekend.
Records for today: High 95 (1918) / Low 48 (1985) / Rain 1.23" (1911)

I wish I had sandy soil. Nope, all clay. Muhlenberg, NW side. Weird thing that I haven't noticed before--we have soaker hoses for our gardens. One runs along the back of the house to water the mulched flowers and shrubs close to the house, One for the tomatoes and beans somewhat close to the house, one for the shrubs/trees planted along the back fence, and one for the squash garden on the far side of the house. I ran the hoses for the two closest to the house last night for an hour each. This morning, my sump pump began cycling on/off in ~10 second increments. The water was filling up that fast, and it hasn't rained in a bit. This happened for about a half hour before it stabilized. (Side note: pretty worrisome as I only noticed it while trying to leave for work at 5am. Ended up being late.)

Granted, we've only had a working, float-switch operated sump since our flooding event two weeks ago, but I can't believe this is normal; we've been watering our gardens like this for a couple of years but the sump well has been consistently dry until two weekends ago when we got over 11" in three days. It's had at least a couple of inches of standing water in it since. I can't help but think that event somehow altered the groundwater flow in my neighborhood.

Long story short, the next time we water, we'll cut it back to 1/2 hour per line and then closely monitor the ensuing results, if any, in our sump.

16 of our last 21 days here in July have been running with below average temperatures. That will change as the next 5 days should see temps running above normal. We could see some showers this afternoon and early evening. The heat really starts to build in by Thursday with many spots in the county touching the 90 degree mark. By Thursday and Friday even the ridge areas should see a rare 90 degree reading. Below normal temps look to return again by Sunday.
Records for today: High 96 (1921) / Low 47 (1976) / Rain 2.00" (1916)
