It's not just the snowpack, since June 1st MQT has received 5.34" of rain.

It did get dry for a week or so in early June but otherwise ground is nice and damp and everything green and lush.

Great conditions for the mosquito population to explode.

Mosquitos and bugs in general have peaked and on a downward trend.

August is my favorite month of Summer.

No real issues this year my way. In town, skeeters generally not much of an issue unless you live along the woods line. Flies are the bigger deal for me, and there has been hardly a fly to be seen. Just bugs in general on the low. That includes bees. My flower garden hasn't seen one yet, and if that continues, it would be worrisome. Bee decline is a serious issue.

Sadly, have only seen one honeybee all Summer.  Mostly just bumblebees, and even they are oddly small in size.  Of course there's a plethora of wasps and hornets, as usual.  Got stung on my hand last week.

Do notice a ton of caterpillars this year.

It's odd they broad-brushed east-central Iowa with a drought downgrade from severe to moderate.  A couple counties, through Cedar Rapids, missed out on much of the rain and have received less than an inch in July.  The drought here hasn't improved at all.  Typically, they do a good job showing small wet and dry holes on the map.

Thought yesterday's thunderstorms would do something but seems like it pretty much just missed the entire Twin cities area.  Looks like we are in a severe drought here:

Maybe it'll be like last year where we had a severe drought during the summer but made it all up in snow during the winter.

The drought map does not make sense.  Over at least the last 30 days, much more rain has fallen in southern Iowa and southern Wisconsin than has fallen here in Cedar Rapids.  I've barely received an inch.  We've been missed by nearly everything, while Madison has been soaked several times.  However, the drought map shows Madison and southeast Iowa in extreme drought while we are only in moderate drought.  Even going back 60 or 90 days, we have not had any more rain than the extreme drought areas.

I'm not being a smartass, so bear with me. Join CoCoRaHS and report your daily precip.  I've done it since 2006, missing only four or five days.  The more reports an area gets, the better the mesoscale/microscale accuracy is in a given location for the Drought Monitor.

Here is an example of precip reports for June for Indiana with and without CoCoRaHS reports.

I understand that it takes more than you reporting to make a significant difference, but every little bit helps.  If all of the weenies here that closely monitor the weather would report, it would make a significant difference.

I hate drought, but there are two silver linings.  I think I've mentioned before that drought knocks Japanese beetle numbers down to very low levels.  There have been almost no beetles again this year.  The other silver lining is this year's earlier drought has led to my crab apple trees being almost totally free of apple scab.  I usually have trouble with bacterial leaf spot on my pepper plants, too, and I think the dryness of the foliage has helped keep the problem in check this year.

Japanese beetles are the worst, can't think of any other pest that can ruin a garden so thoroughly.
