mattie g
Sad to have all those wildfires happening, but the results down here are so anomalous that it's actually pretty cool. Kind of like a Cat 5 up the Potomac and all that.

This is when I'm glad to be retired and not have to be out working in this. A day breathing in this crap all day and it will be like if I crushed 2 packs of Pall Malls. Only side benefit from this is the cool air. Usually the bad AQ days are when we are expected to get to the 90s-100s

Definitely reminded me of growing up in the 80s and walking out of the house and into a hazy soup *every morning* in the summertime.
MN Transplant
The only good news today for us is that the HRRR-Smoke model wants to shunt the absolute worst of the stuff in NY state right now off to our NE, affecting Philly and NYC.

Yep, put on a KN95 for the first time in a while this AM for the walk to school with my kid. He has reactive airway disease and was really feeling it, so he also wore one. They aren't perfect but they stop some of it. Better than nothing. Lots of reasons for this, but one big one is that the aggregate vehicle fleet is MUCH cleaner than it was in the 1980s, and much cleaner than it was in 2000s. All of the hybrids and EVs, and tougher fuel efficiency standards, have really helped. So has the switch away from coal toward burning natural gas for power.

SomeguyfromTakomaPark
Supposed to go camping at Cunningham Falls this weekend. Don't think I wanna sleep outside in a cloud of smoke. I was looking at the 48 hour HRRR and it looks like another plume Friday. Anyone know if it's supposed to clear up Saturday?

Indeed, and I'm curious about same -- slated to camp out just north of Allentown, PA region this weekend. I wonder now if this is going to drag out longer than expected.
