Jebman
Wow it hit 99 today but I thought it was pretty cool, what with a dewpoint of ONLY 70! That weather felt like 57 dewpoints! This is what happens when you get hammered by 103/78 conditions with apparent temps from 116 to 119 for days on end! Today was NICE! I actually fell asleep in the shade! Jebman
@MillvilleWx - Texas will NEVER have casinos, not even 1000 years from now. These people are permanently lost in the 1940s, BUT YOU, you will be in Frederick, MD and you will be in range of at least four wonderful casinos: Horseshoe and MGM National Harbor, both in Baltimore or near it, Live! Casino Hotel Maryland near Hanover, MD, and last but not least, my personal fave: Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races! You have not lived winter, until you have driven Rts 28 north, 7, and 9 into Charles Town in a snowstorm! You are in for a massive treat! Welcome back to real winter, in the greater Mid Atlantic Region! Enjoy those casinos! You are gonna win, and WIN BIG! While you revel in your dream job! LIVE IT UP! I hope the Mid Atlantic gets HECS after HECS after HECS, just for you!

I'll take advantage of some of the casinos for sure, but I'm just happy to be able to do sports betting on mobile

hstorm
Yesterday’s A Meet was the first time im our family’s 3 years of NVSL swimming that I left a meet with a bad taste in my mouth. Our opponent’s coaches/reps were just unpleasant (including a protest and staying for 15 minutes after the meet ended to argue with our referee over a — correct — non-call that they thought should have been a false start). Seemed entirely out of place for a middle division meet It was too bad because both teams swam really well and it was otherwise a fun meet … including an entertaining 8&u fly where everyone DQed. That sucks. I get the idea of being able to protest, but it should only be used in the most obvious of circumstances and if it makes a difference in terms of the outcome of the meet…and even then I question whether that card should be pulled. Full slate of DQs is hilarious! We have a small 8&U crew this year, and few of them are experienced swimmers, so our only boys fly swimmer DQed…but he was close! We had a really fun meet that was closer than we thought it might be. Our opponents had some much better swims that their seed times suggested, but we held them off in the end. And <Dad Brag> my girl had another PB in 9-10 free, nonchalantly going MUCH faster than any of us expected </Dad Brag>.

Oh, FFS. Some NVSL volunteers today, I swear...they relish playing God on deck. Many don't know when to back down, and think they can simply get their way by badgering and shouting down the referee. And unfortuantely, I noticed this kind of behavior infecting the spectrum of youth sports, even when my two sons started soccer and football back in the "peewee" days of the late 1990s. I witnessed the absolute worst and most degenerate behavior in travel lacrosse leagues up/down the East Coast with my oldest in his mid-late HS years just before and just after 2010. The coaches, the parents, the PLAYERS....it all left a bad taste in HIS mouth, and while he went on to play in college, he pretty much "wound down" from HS and those league experiences, and never enjoyed the sport as much as he did in middle school and before...and unfortunately, never returned to the sport on even a recreational basis as an adult. THANKS, loudmouth/parents and coaches, for ruining sports for some players/participants for LIFE. But back to the topic of the day, THIS is the crap associated with NVSL that I absolutely do NOT miss. When my guys were most active in NVSL in the 2000s and early 2010s, I also noticed that many (forgive me) OLDER, grandparent-ish folks were still in charge of NVSL and running the show at the top level...and it was time for them to get the f*ck out and let some of the younger folks run the league, because of their "but we've ALWAYS done it this way" approach. Then again...do we want more folks of the type who call protests at every little referee call running the league at the top? It's a very tough call. Bottom line, I'm sorry that YOU, your FAMILY and your TEAM all had to end your meet that way yesterday...too many people forget it's supposed to be 1) for the KIDS, and 2) FUN. (Rant over...cranky old guy stepping away from the podium now. ) 3
Stormfly
I came back from being out of town for 2 weeks, figured the drought timing was good enough to let things go and now I need to trim and mow some acres and the weather isn't playing nice. It ALWAYS works that way! Wash the car, RAIN. Snow plow isn't ready, SNOW. Haven't run the A/C all summer long, get legit 70 DP, start up and blows hot hair. Compressor contactor wire burned off terminal. Etc Etc Etc.

mattie g
Just add to the chorus above…my co-Rep and I saw false starts on two different relays (both the other team’s) that didn’t get called. We both immediately looked at each other and mouthed “huge flinch”, but it’s just not worth making a fuss about it. There’s something to be said for holding kids accountable to play to the rules, but there are other ways to address it than DQing kids.
Jebman
Its not cool any more in south central Texas. Its hot, and getting hotter. It's 99 degrees with a 77 degree dewpoint. It already feels like 115. The Ridge is Baaaaaaack. 99 degree pure air temperature does not satisfy excessive heat criteria, but 115 heat index DOES meet excessive heat criteria. In any case it is dangerously hot. I have to be out in it for three hours this afternoon. I guess I'll just pretend I am out on another jebwalk.

Especially for younger kids and if it doesn't otherwise affect the start. Our false start issue was a bit more unique, but is addressed clearly in NVSL's false start guidance. One of our swimmers was using a teammate's legs for a backstroke start. At the "take your marks" command, he started to pull up to get into his starting position, but one of his hands slipped off his teammate's legs and he fell backwards (all before getting set in his starting position). NVSL's guidance covers this scenario and says it is not a false start if a swimmer loses his balance and falls into the pool before getting set. We have a very experienced referee. To his credit, he was patient in letting them make their argument. But there was no reason for them to push the issue for 15 minutes after the meet ended. That, however, was just one of the many annoying (and petty) things that they did on Saturday.

Kmlwx
Has anyone heard of any flyovers for the DMV region for tomorrow's Operation Centennial Contact (KC-135s etc). PA is doing one but the DC area hasn't released any plans or info. Looks like Gettysburg may be the closest pass - would be a bit of a drive to go see especially on a workday... Yeah...that's plain as day and even if the Reps weren't aware of the rule (which is totally understandable), they should 100% defer to the Referee in that instance. What a crappy way to end a meet! mappy
Heads up to anyone traveling 83 in the Northern Balt Co -- 83S is shutdown due to a tractor trailer fire that is under the York Road overpass. I imagine 83N is a mess, and I also imagine York Road will be closed at some point so they can inspect the overpass.

Link to a Tweet with a map - the map claims 50 states...but literally not a peep has been announced for anything over the DMV region. I guess if I have to haul my butt up to Gettysburg...you'd think if they were going to make a very public showing all of this event...they'd make it easier to see. Even the PA one just has a sectional map showing the flight path and a general announcement that it will be over the PA State House at noon. Not helpful.
