simpsonsbuff
There have been, the Eagles won the Championship in an all out blizzard in 1949 I think. But the NFL has become a bit of a girly league lately about a lot of things. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_NFL_Championship_Game Gr8 Eagles teams in the late 40's... As for the weather, go snow. A-L-E-X
In that storm, there were hurricane force wind gusts on parts of Long Island. Dec 1992 was much worse for us.

Dsnowx53
As you can infer from the WV, the ridge axis is CURRENTLY centered just east Boise, ID, which is near the ideal spot! Obviously, it'll move a bit east, but right now, during the very crucial time in the storm's development, we have the ridge axis in a perfect spot...allowing a very steep, potent northern stream to dive down at a very good spot. I would love to know other than March 1993(which also was not all snow) if there has been an all snow storm with winds like that.

dbc
MARCH 1988 had the strongest winds for a blizzard here. What was the highest recorded winds in that storm and are sure you don't mean March 1993? Edit: I see you changed that to 1888. What was the highest winds for that one then? I would love to know other than March 1993(which also was not all snow) if there has been an all snow storm with winds like that. I actually think the winds I saw last March were the strongest I had ever seen-- 80 mph gusts! I have requested wind record data for JFK and LGA but no one seems to have them I want to know what the highest wind speeds that were recorded in noreasters were in our area. I think I have EWR's..... they actually came in a triple phaser that tracked through the Ohio Valley in November 1950.... something like 98 mph lol. Besides that, I know NYC recorded 113 mph in Hurricane Hazel that passed well west of us.

A-L-E-X
Excellent point and that was definitely the second thing to stand out at me on that water vapor loop If the storm strengthens enough can it cause backbuilding which stalls that ridge out west from moving? psuhoffman
If the storm becomes strong enough can it halt the ridge axis's movement? No but if it cuts off the ridge position no longer really matters because it is separated from the overall flow for a short time.
NickD2011
Burning my last 5 post, but Eagles game is an 8 pm start, not a 1 pm start. .44 liquid equivalent by 7 pm per Euro, better than a 10:1 fluff factor at -9ºC. Guess 6 to 8 inches. .44 falls during 6 hour period, guess over an inch per hour with fluff factor. If it wasn't the NBC game of the week, I'd guess cancellation for certain, but maybe the NFL doesn't want to canx the equivalent of the old Monday Night Football, the one big national game . I posted last page based on assumed 1 pm EST start, and I'd hate to get anyone roadtripping to PHL. I have no idea whether it'd be canx or not. A football game played in a blizzard would generate higher ratings because people like to watch football played in the snow. They make money from advertising revenue even if no one shows up to the game.
A-L-E-X
Thanks PSU! That would also help us if it stalls out for like 6 hours or so-- means longer duration of heavy snow!
