I don't think I've ever seen one of these in our neck of the woods:

BLOWING DUST WARNING
NWS LINCOLN IL
125 PM CDT MON MAY 1 2023

ILZ051-052-061-020000-
/O.NEW.KILX.DU.W.0001.230501T1825Z-230502T0000Z/
125 PM CDT MON MAY 1 2023
Sangamon-Christian-Shelby-

...BLOWING DUST WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM CDT THIS EVENING...

* WHAT...Visibility less than one quarter mile in blowing dust.

* WHERE...Sangamon, Christian and Shelby Counties.

* WHEN...Until 7 PM CDT this evening.

* IMPACTS...Severely limited visibilities are expected. Travel
will be dangerous and possibly life-threatening.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

People with respiratory problems should make preparations to stay
indoors until the storm passes. Be ready for a sudden drop in
visibility to near zero. If you encounter blowing dust on the
roadway or see it approaching, pull off the road as far as
possible and put your vehicle in park. Turn the lights all the way
off and keep your foot off the brake pedal. Remember, Pull Aside,
Stay Alive.

38.4 at 2:00 pm in May.  This has to rank in the top 3 worst May days ever.

Weather network (Canadian weather channel) going with below average temperatures for May. They anticipate a small break mid may and then this cold wet pattern comes back for 2nd half of May and into early June

What exactly are they basing this on?

Nasty dust storm in Central Illinois south of Springfield has caused a massive pileup on I-55.

holy shit! With all the dust continuing (mixing w/smoke) the scenes are like something out of a day after tomorrow film. Worst travel nightmare right there.

May 1st. This is the 3rd May since 2016 to see snow.

Still a far cry from the winter of 1837, when the St. Clair River was still closed with ice on June 1, and ice was harvested until the Fourth of July. Thanks to the "Urban Heat Island Effect," conditions like these no longer occur.

I love reading about those old pre-record days. I have a book by bella hubbard called "memorials of a half century" which details his time in the detroit area from 1837 to present-day 1887. It's fascinating and he goes into detail on weather/seasons. Maybe in the summer if I have time I will do a post detailing some of that.

May 2020 had snow fall on 5 days (consecutively no less) which had never happened before (May 8-12, with 0.5" on the 10th). May 2016 had exceptionally late snow (15-16th). The latest official flakes for Detroit were May 31, 1910 and the latest measurable was an incredible 5.0" on May 21/22, 1883.

However, the shift in the pattern will not have very much staying power.

During the final two weeks of May we expect to see a transition to a pattern that will resemble the first week of May with below-seasonal temperatures returning to Ontario and Quebec and above-seasonal temperatures across most of Western Canada, especially Alberta.

pretty much not anticipating an abrupt shift to summer this year

They're not giving any reasoning for this, though.
