Historical:

1912 - Residents of Kansas City began to dig out from a storm produced 25 inches of snow in 24 hours. The snowfall total was nearly twice that of any other storm of modern record in Kansas City before or since that time. A record 40 inches of snow fell during the month of March that year, and the total for the winter season of 67 inches was also a record. By late February of that year Kansas City had received just six inches of snow. Olathe KS received 37 inches of snow in the snowstorm, establishing a single storm record for the state of Kansas. (23rd-24th) (The Kansas City Weather Almanac) (The Weather Channel)

1929: St. Louis, Missouri soared to 92 degrees; their all-time record high for March.

1987 - A winter-like storm in the central U.S. produced blizzard conditions from South Dakota to western Kansas. Snowfall totals ranged up to 24 inches at Neligh NE, with 19 inches at Winner SD. Winds gusting to 60 mph created twelve foot snow drifts in Nebraska stranding thousands on the highways. (Storm Data) (The National Weather Summary)

1988 - Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced severe weather from Minnesota to northeastern Texas. The thunderstorms spawned ten tornadoes, including one which injured five persons near Raymondville MO. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1989 - Low pressure off the coast of Virginia brought heavy rain to the Middle Atlantic Coast States, and heavy snow to the Northern Appalachians. Cape Hatteras NC was soaked with 5.20 inches of rain in 24 hours, and snowfall totals in Vermont ranged up to 12 inches. Winds gusted to 52 mph at New York City. (Storm Data) (The National Weather Summary)

1990 - The storm system which produced heavy snow in the Lower Missouri Valley the previous day, spread heavy snow across parts of the Upper Ohio Valley and the Middle Atlantic Coast Region. Snowfall totals of 2.2 inches at Philadelphia PA and 2.4 inches at Atlantic City NJ were records for the date. Up to six inches of snow blanketed southern Ohio. In the Middle Atlantic Coast Region, snow coated the blossoms of cherry trees which had bloomed in 80 degree weather the previous week. (Storm Data) (The National Weather Summary)

On this date 40 years ago, Atlanta (the official station at the airport) received 7.9" of a very wet snow from a Miller A GOM low near the tail end of the very strong El Niño of 1982-3. The high and low that day were 47/32 with the high just after midnight preceding the snow. Nowhere near that much had been expected due to the borderline temperatures. This 7.9" is the 3rd heaviest on record in Atlanta with only late January of 1940's 8.3" at the airport (10" downtown) and mid January of 1893's 9.6" (downtown) exceeding this. For those not familiar, the airport is ~10 miles south of downtown.

During the 11 days prior, KATL's lowest was 32 (and that was 11 days prior) while highs were all 51-73.

We even got a trace of sleet way down here (Savannah) from this, our second latest wintry precip on record.

State College finally pulled back ahead of Islip in 5 year snowfall averages since 18-19. Islip was able to hold the lead from 08-09 to 17-18. But the current lead that State College holds is from a much lower level around 30”. Earlier 5 year periods peaked over 60” back in the mid 90s. The high era for Islip was 13-14 to 14-18 with over 50”. So those separate 5 year periods may very well be a peak for both locations.

I dont remember either of these storms, Tony, did either of them produce accumulating snow in our area? I only remember the April 1990 minor event.

This 7.9" is the 3rd heaviest on record in Atlanta with only late January of 1940's 8.3" at the airport (10" downtown) and mid January of 1893's ~10-11" (downtown) exceeding this. For those not familiar, the airport is ~10 miles south of downtown.

During the 11 days prior, KATL's lowest was 32 (and that was 11 days prior) while highs were all 51-73.

We even got a trace of sleet way down here (Savannah) from this, our second latest wintry precip on record.

even though that was a mild winter, aside from the February HECS it was known for late season snows, as it had JFK's latest accumulating snowfall on record, April 19-20, 1983, 1.5 inches

What once looked like quite a wet period Thursday through Saturday is turning out to be modest at best.  Had just .11" at my location for the 24 hour period ending 8:00 this morning.  Most of the "reliable" guidance ("reliable guidance" has turned into quite the oxymoron lately) has greatly scaled back rainfall totals.  This has been an ongoing trend for many months with just a few exceptions.  Most locations can now expect 3 day totals in the .25" - .75" range.  Five to seven days ago this was modeled as a 1.5" - 2.0" area wide soaking.

In the SE, DJF 1982-3 temperatures averaged near normal. KATL had 10.3" that season from a highly unusual four different events. No season's snowfall has exceeded that there since but there was heavier prior, including 1935-6 and the historic 1894-5.

Regarding that April of 1983 latest on record JFK accumulating snow that you mentioned, Raleigh, NC, had 1.8" on the 18th from the same system. That was and still is their latest measurable on record, with 1989's April 11th second latest. Those are the only two measurable April events there during the last 100 years. But the prior 40 years had four Aprils with measurable.

31” is still atrocious for State College. Their long term average is right around Boston’s. There has definitely been a shift in the last 15 years away from big snow seasons in central PA. Maybe it’s lack of clippers along with fewer coast hugging Miller A type systems. All the cutters along with more Miller Bs skip right over them or sleet/rain just like here. All the SWFEs do them zero good.

Normal Snowfall in Central PA

Central PA really isn't a great spot for big snows. They have a longer snow season due to elevation + being inland, but in practice that just means more time to get nuisance nickel and dime events that eventually add up to their modest 30-45 inch averages. They usually need Miller A inland runners to get big storms and those don't come around often. The Poconos are the best spot for snow because they have the elevation while also being far enough east to benefit from more coastal storms. The 2010s were an anomaly with events usually favoring the coast over the interior but I think we're seeing a reversion to the mean now. The problem for Central PA is that they're a bit too interior to benefit from this.

Yep, also very limited lake effect once you go east of the Allegheny Ridge or Laurel Highlands. A few times per season State College gets the remnants of a streamer that can drop up to 1-2” but often it’s squalls that can quickly coat the ground then get blown away. I went to PSU there right after the big 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons that started off the generally lame stretch that continues today outside a few exceptions. Was quite frustrating seeing all types of storms hit east and north of there.

A storm will then bring a cold rain to the region to start the weekend. Some sleet is possible in New York City and its nearby suburbs. There may even be a little snow in the distant northern and western suburbs at the onset of the precipitation.

The first week of April could be somewhat cooler than normal. As has been the case throughout the winter and early part of spring, the coldest air will likely remain in western and central North America.

Historic experience with very low snowfall totals through February argues that a very snowy March or big snowstorm during March or April are unlikely. There were 16 winters that had less than 8" of snowfall through February in New York City. Just two (13%) had a 6" or greater snowstorm during March or April: 1889-1890: 6.0" on March 19th and 1991-1992: 6.2" on March 19th.

With just 2.3" snowfall through March 19, New York City is now very likely to finish the season with less than 10" of snow. Since 1869-70, all 10 winters with less than 8.5" of snow through March 19th wound up with less than 10" of seasonal snowfall. New York City is currently on a path that could culminate in its setting a new record for lowest seasonal snowfall.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +1.4°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was +0.1°C for the week centered around March 15. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +0.98°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged -0.26°C. Neutral ENSO conditions will likely prevail through at least mid-spring.

The SOI was -5.07 today.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was +1.818 today.

On March 22 the MJO was in Phase 2 at an amplitude of 1.800 (RMM). The March 21-adjusted amplitude was 1.728 (RMM).

Based on sensitivity analysis applied to the latest guidance, there is an implied 92% probability that New York City will have a warmer than normal March (1991-2020 normal). March will likely finish with a mean temperature near 44.3° (1.5° above normal normal).

Yeah, the March 1993 superstorm was a classic example for them as the 90s were their recent heavy snowstorm peak.

Yes, I was planning on applying my crabgrass preventer, now I am holding off...

Thanks for the map I have been looking for something like that but I think it's way underdone for elevated regions of eastern PA, no way does MPO only average 30-36 inches of snow, it's at least twice that.  Eastern PA near or over 2000 feet has to average at least 60 inches of snow and probably more like 70-75.
