Roger Smith
Some guidance has been showing a cold end to March, so here are the coldest last three day periods of March in NYC climate history. They are ranked by average daily maximum to prevent the urban heat island from totally dominating the list. To get onto this list, there must be a maximum of 39F or lower on one of the three days, or if not, two below 42F, or failing that, all three must be 45F or lower. Only the top occasions with all three below 45F should be ranked, as some of the higher averages might not be the next coldest. Closest three non-qualifiers since 1985 (by average max) are included (1990, 2001, 2004). Only 2022 qualified under the rules used since 1984, and it was marginal in this list but March 28th-30th 2022 would have placed a more impressive tied for fifth coldest daytime average among these, and it set a new record low maximum of 33F on the 28th (29F is record low maximum for 29th). I also included 1893 for 28th-30th for the same reason, and it did not qualify for the 29th-31st list. Daily record values are in bold. Even if this cold spell fades out of the model guidance before we reach the interval, this forms an interesting study, and the lack of such cold spells in recent decades is notable. If we had used minimum rather than maximum temperatures, 2015 average was 32.0 with 25 on 29th, 2008 had an average minimum of 32.7 for the last three days of March, and 2011 was 34.7. These intervals had average daytime highs of 48 to 49 F. 1

Good afternoon MANDA. I was approaching 31 late in that 77-78 cold season. The condensed remnant old snow turned to ice on my inner city block was almost unbreakable. I remember a neighbor, two row houses down from me turning on the hydrant, during a mild spell, to try and break the hard ice engulfing the curb. 45 years ago. Baring a rare set of extremes, I find it difficult to believe we will (inner city wise) ever see that again. Stay well, as always ….

Yeah, 76-77 was the last top 10 coldest winter in NYC going back to around 1870. Places with a shorter period of record like HPN and ISP were the coldest. Was actually the coldest winter at Philly going back to 1875. Was the 3rd coldest Dec-Jan in NYC. Great memories! Yeah, I agree it is hard to imagine anything like this happening again anytime soon with the current climatic cycle.

donsutherland1
On this date in 1998, 5.0" of snow fell boosting winter 1997-98's seasonal snowfall to 5.5". As a result, with its 2.3" of snow to date, the 2022-23 snow season ranks as the least snowy season through March 22nd. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy and very mild. Some showers are likely. Much of this week will feature readings in the 50s and even 60s. Overall, it now appears likely that March will wind up warmer than normal. April could start on a cool, but not necessarily exceptionally cold note. As has been the case throughout the winter and early part of spring, the coldest air will likely remain in western and central North America. Historic experience with very low snowfall totals through February argues that a very snowy March or big snowstorm during March or April are unlikely. There were 16 winters that had less than 8" of snowfall through February in New York City. Just two (13%) had a 6" or greater snowstorm during March or April: 1889-1890: 6.0" on March 19th and 1991-1992: 6.2" on March 19th. With just 2.3" snowfall through March 19, New York City is now very likely to finish the season with less than 10" of snow. Since 1869-70, all 10 winters with less than 8.5" of snow through March 19th wound up with less than 10" of seasonal snowfall. New York City is currently on a path that could culminate in its setting a new record for lowest seasonal snowfall. The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +1.4°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was +0.1°C for the week centered around March 15. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +0.98°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged -0.26°C. Neutral ENSO conditions will likely prevail through at least mid-spring. The SOI was +6.75 today. The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was +2.080 today. On March 20 the MJO was in Phase 1 at an amplitude of 1.856 (RMM). The March 19-adjusted amplitude was 2.311 (RMM). Based on sensitivity analysis applied to the latest guidance, there is an implied 85% probability that New York City will have a warmer than normal March (1991-2020 normal). March will likely finish with a mean temperature near 44.1° (1.3° above normal normal).

Wow, Philly crushed it getting to first place...hold my beer type of a record. Incomprehensible we could get something like that today. Two questions if you have time. What were temperature departures like for February 1977. I distinctly remember walking the 2 miles home from school and sweating at some point during that February. What was the seasonal snow total for that winter. I just remember one storm of note but I do remember what fell just kept building up because nothing melted for December and January. Roger Smith
In 1977, as discussed, the winter did relent its grip during February but even so, the month was quite average and finished 73rd warmest of the 155 to date (mean 33.5 F). March 1977 was warm and finished at 46.8 F which was the eleventh warmest of the 154 so far. April 1977 was warm at times and finished tied 36th warmest. May 1977 was a scorcher at times, except for that one brief cold shot where a trace of snow fell in NYC, and finished 24th warmest.

I just remember sweating on several days and thinking it was remarkable after the bitter January. April 1976 had the 3 day heatwave at Easter when it hit I believe 96 in the park on Easter Sunday.
