I’m going out of town for a month next week. Prepare for the most epic February ever.

I said that 4 years ago when I became a snowbird and started going down to florida  dec thru march. I don't believe my backyard has seen a legit 8+ snowstorm since, so I don't think anyone needs to prepare for anything lol.

I have more lined up that are just outside of the top 10. However, for the sake of not jinxing them with some wrap around flakes tomorrow or weekend snow, will hold off on posting those for now.

Is this going to be an all-encompassing thread for Chicago records (snowfall, temps, precip) or just snow futility?

This will be all-encompassing.

Like I said, this is a thread I wanted to start many years ago...but it just never happened.

:yikes: Guess I forgot you guys had been here before, and just a short decade ago.  The two DEC blizzards really avoided ORD. I at least got a glancing blow with the Boxing Day storm at RMY

Rolling these years forward, here were the final snowfall amounts for each.  Pretty ugly overall, with every year finishing with below average snowfall.

Doesn't mean that this year's total has to fall within this range, but it gives a sense of where the goalposts have been.  If there is one positive, it's that the two years in the 2000s rallied the most to break 30"

30.1"  2012-13

19.1"  1912-13

12.0"  1936-37

21.7"  1889-90

24.0"  1943-44

19.0"  1901-02

20.6"  1905-06

????   2022-23

31.1"  2001-02

26.6"  1982-83

21.5"  1922-23

Thought I'd move this over here so as to not clutter up the storm thread.  Eight of the top 15 February Chicago snow totals have occurred in the past 15 years. Looks like quite a trend to me.

1.  2011  29"

3. 2015  26.8"

6. 2016  22.5"

8. 2008 21.8"

9. 2021  21.6"

T 11. 2018  20.3"

T 11.  2007 20.3"

15.  2014  19.5"

An article from January 6th states that Chicago had it's cloudiest open to January since 1992 (followed by the Pinatubo-induced cold summer later that year).

https://wgntv.com/tom-skilling-2/brace-for-a-cloudy-cold-and-breezy-weekend/

As of January 20th, possible sunshine for Chicago is only 19%. Chicago's cloudiest January on record was in 1998 with only 20% of possible sunshine. Today was Chicago's 7th consecutive day without sunshine. Based on how the upcoming week is going to be, Chicago may very well break the January record for lowest sunshine this month.

I would throw out (or at least asterisk) the warm DJFs from the 1800s, as the official measurements were influenced heavily by the downtown and/or lakeside location. Similar to Logan Airport for Boston.

That’s why 5 of the top 6 warmest DJFs occurred in the late 1800s. It’s not as if all of those winters were warmer than some of our recent clunkers, apples to apples.

Regardless, this list highlights how bad the winter climo is for downtown Chicago. It’s already bad enough inland…
