Early analysis is that these aren’t severe here (I’ve seen a few similar storms the last couple summers), but it doesn’t matter…we need the rain and we’re getting it.  Wouldn’t be surprised to see 1-1.5”+ in the gauges around here, when all is said and done.

* Severe Thunderstorm Warning for...
  Southern Madison County in northwestern Virginia...
  Southwestern Orange County in central Virginia...
  South central Rockingham County in western Virginia...
  Northern Albemarle County in central Virginia...
  Greene County in central Virginia...
  East central Augusta County in western Virginia...
  Southwestern Culpeper County in northern Virginia...

* Until 530 PM EDT.

* At 448 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Free Union,
  or 11 miles northwest of Charlottesville, moving east at 45 mph.

  HAZARD...70 mph wind gusts and ping pong ball size hail.

  SOURCE...Radar indicated.

  IMPACT...Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches
           to fall. This could injure those outdoors, as well as
           damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by
           downed trees. Localized power outages are possible.
           Unsecured light objects may become projectiles.

* Locations impacted include...
  Orange, Madison, Crozet, Stanardsville, Free Union, Westmoreland,
  Hollymead, Gordonsville, Ruckersville, Brightwood, Quinque, Eheart,
  Oakpark, Barboursville, Stony Point, Haneytown, Montpelier Station,
  Newtown, Nasons and Madison Mills.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 900 PM EDT for central,
western, northern and northwestern Virginia.

Remain alert for a possible tornado! Tornadoes can develop quickly
from severe thunderstorms. If you spot a tornado go at once into the
basement or small central room in a sturdy structure.

This is an EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION with tornado like wind
speeds expected. Mobile homes and high profile vehicles are

serious injury and significant property damage.

A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 900 PM EDT for northern,
central and north central Maryland.

2 miles from Point of Rocks here (south). Initial winds but nothing severe. Rain was moderate but is now heavy. Winds have subsided with no thunder or lightning as of yet.

  North central Carroll County in north central Maryland...

* Until 500 PM EDT.

* At 452 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
  was located near Littlestown, or near Westminster, moving northeast
  at 60 mph.

  HAZARD...Tornado.

  SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation.

  IMPACT...For those in the direct path of a tornado touchdown,
           flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without
           shelter. Damage to roofs, siding, and windows may occur.
           Mobile homes may be damaged or destroyed. Tree damage is
           likely.

* This tornadic thunderstorm will remain over mainly rural areas of
  north central Carroll County.

I probably should have said that the VA stuff looks more discreet and not congealing into what MD has. But I should shut my face and find a road nearby that I can go 80 on

Leesburg, Olney, Herndon, Westminster, Damascus, Broadlands,

Continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms,
even for several minutes beyond the strongest part of the storm.
Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature`s leading
killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to
be struck by lightning.
