...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH

THURSDAY AFTERNOON...

 

* WHAT...Freezing rain and sleet. Significant ice accumulation

  around a quarter of an inch, with up to half an inch possible

  along the ridges. Total sleet accumulations around one inch

  possible.

 

* WHERE...Portions of northwest Virginia and panhandle West

  Virginia.

 

* WHEN...Wintry precipitation begins as early as Wednesday

  evening, then becomes more intense overnight Wednesday into

  Thursday morning. Warmer air should push into the valleys by

  Thursday afternoon, but freezing rain likely continues on the

  ridges through through Thursday evening.

 

* IMPACTS...Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the

  ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions

  will likely impact the morning and evening commutes.

Yeah they just added the Winchester area into the mix. Looks like they are thinking sleet here. Dewpoints at onset have actually come down a little bit today with the 12Z runs. Mid teens for my area.

Yep, 3k showing mid to upper teens in the watch areas. Even in non watch areas teens and 20s.

I always think you should half/third the ice maps given latent heat release, etc to get an idea for actual accretion. But even doing that is a highly impactful event in the mountains and impactful for 81.

I’m going to predict the cloud increasing holds off until 7/8pm  Wednesday.  By then DCA temps and  dewpoints  I think will be 37/20 and if we can get precip that is not real light but closer to light-moderate then by midnight-2am DCA should be 30/28 and it’s going to be worth watching
