I'll admit this cold is more fierce than I expected here. It's 9 degrees out right now.

Put me down for a 50 degree drop in about 17 hours.  High of 53 early this morning, and we currently stand at 3.  DP -7 and WC -10

Equally impressive is the 60-65 degree drop in some of the dewpoints during that same time frame.

We must have broken some records.

Our current temperature is 9.9° with a windchill of -1.8°.

I looked at six different models on windy.com and for our location at 10 PM they ranged from 12° to 15°. We are significantly lower than that.

Yea doesn't sound too bad. 2 degrees with 40 mph gusts.

In Pittsburgh for Christmas, really crazy conditions out here. -5 in the middle of the afternoon with 50 mph gusts, absolutely wild and incredibly cold. Near whiteout-conditions on the turnpike from blowing snow, and that was from just a few inches of accumulation. Some stations in the northern part of the state hit blizzard conditions.

I Just put on the sunscreen as it's a rather " balmy " 6 degrees in New City right now. It was around this time last night ( maybe an hour later ) when I walked the dog and it was 57 degrees.

Unless I'm mistaken, this is the first single digit December temperature since 2017 where NYC recorded nine degrees, 10 minutes before 2018 started.

Currently -3 here in the Berkshire as of 2:30 this AM. Reached 59 for a high here yesterday, one the FROPA moved across, temps dropped like a rock. By 8 PM it was down to 15F. Winds in excess of 45MPH knocked out power earlier, thankfully our backup generator kicked in. It is 3F back in HPN.

Agree. I've been watching this and was going to post something, but you nailed it. You can now see the series of wave breaks as the vortex retrogrades. We even see the ridge breaking in the east now too. With the tropical signal headed through 6,7,8. I'd consider it to be a likely progression at that. But just to add on, I mentioned no pain no gain with the AK vortex in a previous post and that is a good loop now.

So as that feature retrogrades back to the sea of Okhotsk. You start to crank up the heat in the strat as well. Which is what we like to see. This is also in accordance with the tropical signal. This is a situation that is nothing major yet, but will definitely have to be watched as there is real support for consequences up higher. Merry Christmas.

NYC is just 1° off the record low which hasn’t happened in late December since the 1980s.

8*(55%RH) here at 6am.{was 11 at midnight}.      Still 8* at 9am as it has been since 4am-held till after 10am.        11* at Noon.      15* at 3pm.

Caribou is usually below 0° when NYC gets into the single digits but the SW flow is keeping them at 20° instead.

Following yesterday’s historic drop in temperatures, today will be mostly sunny and very cold.  High temperatures will reach the upper teens and lower 20s.  Likely high temperatures around the region include:

Newark: 21°

Philadelphia: 21°

Despite sunshine, it will again be very cold tomorrow.

New York City: 30-Year: 42.1°; 15-Year: 43.0°

Newark: 30-Year: 42.6°; 15-Year: 43.7°

Philadelphia: 30-Year: 43.9°; 15-Year: 44.9°

The last time New York City had a high temperature in the teens was January 31, 2019 when the high was 16°. The last time New York City had a high in the teens in December was December 28, 2017 when the temperature topped out at 17°.
