Thanks for this.

One thing I would like to throw out there is Bridgeport under reports by at least 20%.

So every single town, including Bridgeport itself outside of the Stratfield airport where the measurements are taken, are wayyyyyy higher than the above.

At no point was any town in SW CT lower than 30 for average annual.

BDR records are unfortunately useless :(

For instance I was Living in Norwalk on the coast 2000 through 2010, and only receive 3 winters of less than 36 inches. Eclipsed 40 inches 5 times with one at 67 and one at 52.

Worst was the blizzard of 1996 where BDR reported 15 while every other town 25 plus. Pathetic on their part.

Sorry to vent, however didn't want viewers to believe that SW CT averaged less snowfall than all surrounding areas :)

It’s tough to to say for sure since there is often big difference between Danbury and the immediate coast. Bridgeport isn’t that different from the other surrounding coastal sites. But the interior of Fairfield gets more snow since it’s often north of the rain snow line.

The average for your area is around 40” since 2010. It was around half that much from 1980 to 2000. So who knows what is average snowfall anymore.

that speaks to a larger problem about how we actually calculate average annual snowfall.

I imagine it will all get washed out as a statistical anomaly long range as it becomes too warm to snow frequently.

Long Island snowfall isnt going to continue an upward trend medium or long term. It will be rainfall totals that increase

Thanks again.

Unfortunately I can guarantee it's not an coast vs. inland issue. Lived in Norwalk (coastal town) my whole life until September 2014.

BDR 100% under reports by a large margin.

Not saying inland does not do better cause they do, just saying that the BDR records are useless.

BDRs average annual snowfall was less than Central Park at one point which makes zero sense outside of extreme blocking events like 09/10.

I remember storms where all of long island changed to rain way before I did, measured more snow IMBY than LGA and somehow, someway Bridgeport recorded LESS snow than LGA and Central Park. Overrunning events so not situations where a north wind from a coastal enhances LI snowfall rates.

I wish SW CT has a legitimate reporting station such as LGA, JFK, Central Park etc. to reference.

Could there be a legitimate reason why this airport under reports by such a large amount? Maybe. One theory is that since this airport is on a peninsula in LI sound that water temps and wind blow-off could affect the totals.

Sorry to vent again but so frustrating.

I think it’s more of a geographic location thing like you mentioned sticking out into the Long Island Sound. While the nearby success hill COOP was still recording snowfall, its snowfall was nearly identical to the airport from 2010 to 2018. Unfortunately, looks like that COOP hasn’t reported snow in several years. The difference between snowfall at both sites was only 0.4”.

One strange aspect we are seeing yet again much as we did 7-10-12 days out from the most recent cold stretch is the Op runs of the GFS/EC are/were insanely mild and ridgey in the east relative to the ensembles...not sure why this is the case but indeed we saw this back in early November too when the ensembles showed almost an entirely 180'd pattern in the long range compared to Ops...its not unusual to see that on some runs but it was almost persistent and it is again.

Yeah it's likely an anomaly since it is south of all CT and surrounded by water. Therefore, should be disregarded outside of trend analysis.

Norwalk used to have a reporting station years ago. Hopefully a legitimate station to represent coastal SW CT accurately is opened.

The trend analysis is the same across the whole area. Snowfall has nearly doubled from 2002-2022 over the previous 20 years. Islip averages 38.6 “ now vs only 22.1.” from 1982-2002 .That’s why its so hard to talk averages anymore in regard to snowfall since it has been so variable since the early 1980s.

Good morning BW. The statistics are fascinating to me. I was wondering, considering the difference in Islip snowfall over the past decades, has the number of measurable snowfall events also increased or is it the occurrence of larger not more QPF frozen events that have caused the upward change. Thank you and others for your ongoing and excellent contributions for those of us still trying to understand. As always ….

Not bad at all back and forth

No, that's fantastic news if that plays out. Because it could have very easily just been stuck in phase 3 this year with the setup. Like qbow and La Nina likes to do. Getting into the Pacific is always tremendously better. Phase 3 is a killer on many levels.
