Chinook
Here are observations from yesterday's high winds and dust storm. The cold front drove a wall of dirt, which shows up on the colorized visible satellite image shown below. Apparently there are dust storm polygons. (Who knew?) mayjawintastawm
I'm thinking that if the current forecast temps verify, Thursday AM could be the coldest day in the Denver Metro since we moved here in August 2010, and if the winds verify, definitely the coldest with windchill. Anyone been here long enough/have the data to back that up, or not? EDIT: Nope, looks like it was -20 at DEN on 12/30/14. Still wonder about the windchill, don't know where to get data for that.

Chinook
So this is happening. Cheyenne had whiteout conditions while -12 degrees, wind gusts to 38 knots, blizzard. Cheyenne was recently -25 with wind chill of -51. Denver had snow, now its -22 with wind chill of -40. That never happened when I was there. ValpoVike
We ended up over achieving to forecast up here as I recorded a low of -17 this morning. Thankfully winds are very light. Ended up with about 3.5” of snow overnight.
mayjawintastawm
We got 1.6" with a low of -14. Once the sun came out it was actually enjoyable with adequate clothing. My year-old Irish Wolfhound was enjoying it immensely. Somehow the cold doesn't bother her feet as much as with the other dogs.
beavis1729
Looks like Denver (officially at DIA) hit -24 this morning. That's the 3rd coldest daily low temp on record in December: -25 on 12/22/1990 -25 on 12/24/1876 All-time coldest is -29 on 1/9/1875. Also, Denver's coldest daily max temp on record in December is -8 on 12/21/1983 (high -8, low -21). There's a slight chance of this being broken or tied today, but unfortunately I think it will warm up to around -5.
mayjawintastawm
A rancher friend of mine just north of Burlington CO observed a temp drop of 53 degrees (47 to -6) in 50 minutes yesterday afternoon on her home weather station. That struck me as a possible state record if it were official, but I can't find any CO state records like that. DEN broke the station record yesterday with a 42 degree 1-hour drop, and the national record is 58 degrees in Spearfish SD in 1943. Anyone have any info about what the CO state record is, or even if one exists? Would be cool to tell her that her place broke a record, even if unofficial. From NWS Denver...although these are only the record calendar day, 2-day, and 3-day temp changes...as opposed to hours. Yesterday made the list as the 3rd largest calendar day temp change (51 to -10), and yesterday & today was the 2nd largest 2-day temp change (51 to -24). https://www.weather.gov/bou/denvertemperaturechanges
ValpoVike
I think part of the issue is a lack of consistent data due to some stations reporting real-time while others in preset intervals. I could be wrong though.

mayjawintastawm
Light rain and low 40s this afternoon, rare for this time of year. Gloomy. Makes me glad I don't live in Chicago or the PNW. Models go nuts with QPF this evening, and our change to snow is almost always quicker than others. We will see! Putting the snow board out in the yard now.
