Yeah that was mentioned on the nightly newscast so I haven't been able to find anything about that 75% number but here is something I just found about the white blankets they lay down.

As E&E News reported in a recent article on geoengineering, the annual hike is part of a doomed effort to protect the massive blocks of ice from the rising summer heat.

Antarctica has about 90% of the worlds ice volume and about 70% of the worlds fresh water. At least the Antarctica is not melting as fast as the Alps. This report was on ABC news tonight and it was a little misleading.

So you're saying a cold snowy winter would worsen the economy and geopolitics...?

The real classic winters during WW1 and WW2 were cold and snowy both here and in Europe.

Thinking of winters like 1916-17 and 1917-18 and then 1941-42 and 1942-43.

We could also have a mild and snowy winter.  That seems to happen more often now.

Oh you saw it too!  That's what I was watching.

The white blanket cover on the Alps thing is true (I posted a link about that.)

I think the winter may turn out like 1974-75, the current situation is similar, after a generally cold early October it turned very mild late in the month, hit 80 on Nov 1st and then stayed dull but mild all through Nov-Dec, January  1975 quite mild too, February mild with heavy rainfalls, March turned colder with some below normal intervals, and the first half of April 1975 was unusually cold with a big snowstorm across the Great Lakes that was the latest real blizzard I experienced in my years living in Ontario. Then May 1975 turned scorching hot and very dry.

That sort of winter can open up a few brief intervals for a coastal event of some kind, I can vaguely recall a snowfall over eastern Ontario and southern Quebec that was heavy but melted right away in Dec 1974 but in the Toronto area that missed and the month was generally snow-free.

By the way, Don you'll be interested in this, as you probably know, the huge positive temperature anomalies run up over this western region (WA, BC) suddenly switched sign a few days ago and we are eroding that near-record value down towards maybe +4F outcomes, it has been cold enough for snow in my area all week, although we only got a brief dump that has melted. But with that unusual warmth, we are still left with a lot of leaf cover locally and the fall colors are quite vibrant, normally this would end mid-October with winds and rain that we just haven't seen at all so far this month (inland, they have seen rain on the coast).

Warmer October to the north and east of NYC and cooler south and west. Continuation of this theme for the rest of the month. Ridge set up again over the NW Atlantic record warm pool. This allowed for two record warm low minimums in a row at ISP.

The last 5 days of October are averaging  55degs.(51/63) or +2.     The first week of November is averaging  a ridiculous  63degs.(56/70) or +12!

Month to date is  57.4[-1.4].        October should end at 57.0[-0.9].

Reached 70 here yesterday.

Today:   63-66, wind n.-breezy, m. sunny, 47 tomorrow AM.

57*(75%RH) here at 7am.       58* at 9am.        60* at Noon.      63* at 2pm.      64* at 3pm.       65* at 3:30pm.
