I was up at Bolton Valley this afternoon, so I can pass along some observations.

Here’s the snow depth profile I found in the midafternoon timeframe:

340’: 2-3”

1,000’: 3”

1,500’: 4”

2,000’: 6-7”

2,500’: 7

3,000’: 8-9”

The settled snow depths depended heavily on the underlying surface – grassy areas that insulated the snow from the ground tended to have a couple more inches of depth, so it really seemed like there was some consolidation/melting due to warm ground.

Even at 2,000’ in the Bolton Valley Village area it edged above freezing this afternoon, and it was somewhere in the 2,700’ elevation range where temperatures finally dropped below the freezing mark.  The snow above the point was much less consolidated, so he snow below that elevation is actually better set up to serve as a base.  Liquid equivalent thus far at our site for this storm is 0.70”, so the mountain should be somewhere in that range or higher.

The most notable jump in accumulations was between 1,500’ and 2,000’, and perhaps somewhere between there was when consolidation jumped a lot due to the temperatures.  The increase in depth was really quite slow above 2,000’, and it was hard to see much of a change until I hit the freezing line around 2,700’ – the depth got a bump there because above that point it was still quite dry and hadn’t seen any consolidation.

The freezing line was dropping as the afternoon wore on, and backside snows had started up rather vigorously when I was heading home.  That snowfall appeared to be confined to the higher elevations around here though, because I haven’t seen any back side snows yet here at our site.

Adding a few shots that I didn't have the chance to put with yesterday's report:

Nights like this remind me why I love upslope so much.

I was watching the snow fall while watching football, and I thought to myself- Alex must be loving this

I got new flood lights for the outside so I can sit on my couch and watch the snow out my windows

Couple more scraps this afternoon/evening, little under 2" additional. Nasty out there right now though, man.

Yeah looks like we ended up just over 2” in town today.

It is brutal wind/cold combo for November though.  Wind chills -25F on Mansfield now and -47F on Mount Washington.

Just for posterity, the snow showers/squalls this morning were intense with under 1/4sm vis.  Rare for an ASOS.

What a week to be honest for mid-November.

Definitely a good taste of winter today up in Coos County, hiking near 2,000 feet and the winds were strong and biting. Just after sunset, experienced a solid band of snow while driving through Jefferson/Randolph just north of the Presidential Range and then turning into Gorham up to Berlin and the night sky was clear with many stars. Let's see the single digits tomorrow morning!

Def a pretty deep winter feel for sure this week, even for some valley locations. Very minimal melting. Although it's a pretty sharp cutoff down here where snowcover is gone.

Yeah the daily snows have helped too. Not some snowfall that then leaves you with no more flakes the rest of the week.  But brushing snow off the car on 3 of the last 5 days adds to the wintry appeal.

Missing hiker in Franconia Notch. She was dropped off at Lafayette Place Campground to hike Lafayette Haytack and Flume yesterday morning. Her ride went to the meet up parking lot around 4pm. Waited...she never showed, so they called in a missing hiker report. 3 SAR Teams went out last night after dark...no word yet

Just watched the 5pm news.  The search teams quit for the day.  Didn't find her. 19 years old. She left yesterday early morning to hike to the top of Lafayette with just sneakers on.  No food, no lights, little water.  How do people make such bad decisions?

Yikes.  No word yet?

It was really cold last night.  Mountain wind chills from Mansfield at 4,000ft were like -25 to -30F, and MWN at 6,000ft was like -50F.

Low over this way was 4F this morning.

At 5 p.m. on Monday the pemigewasset valley search team reported that she had not been found with upwards of 60 people on the ground today. A Blackhawk made many pivots on their flight into the area of her hike and there was a civil air patrol plane that did loops on the other side near Cannon.

Her mother supposedly dropped her off at 5 a.m. on Sunday and saw her walk up the trail and her friend was supposed to pick her up at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Too many unknowns and what-ifs, hoping she is not on the mountain and OK somewhere.
