Below freezing temps, first flakes possible tonight and the return of snow on the GFS clown range.  I figured I'd start the thread from the snowiest place in the east with hopes that leads to a great NNE snow season.  If it winds up being crap, I'll never start one again and just blame phin.

Nice, thanks for starting this up, and well put on the snow stuff.  Your comment on the crap season got me wondering how Jay Peak actually did in that horrendous 2015-2016 season, so I checked the historical data on their website and Tony Crocker’s website.

SNOWFALL (INCHES)

2020-2021       291"

2019-2020       252"

2018-2019       423"

2017-2018       378"

2016-2017       491"

2015-2016       205"

2014-2015       373"

2013-2014       317"

2012-2013       362"

2011-2012       254"

2010-2011       374"

2009-2010       293"

2008-2009       368"

2007-2008       417"

2006-2007       409"

2005-2006       387"

2004-2005       334"

2003-2004       266"

2002-2003       268"

2001-2002       305"

2000-2001       581"

1999-2000       465"

1998-1999       305"

1997-1998       355"

1996-1997       407"

1995-1996       389"

They still broke 200”, and that season had to bring together a seriously impressive collision of factors to really bottom out on snowfall in the Northern Greens like that.  We’ve certainly got the relatively low annual snowfall variance going on around here, and analysis on my data set indicates that 2015-2016 was bottom 1% of seasons.  So hopefully we’ve paid our dues for quite a long time with that one, and Phin is safe.

Looking at the Jay Peak data, the past couple of seasons have actually been below average, so an uptick wouldn’t be too surprising – based on the data from the past 25+ seasons, it doesn’t like look like they typically see more than two sub-300” seasons in a row.

Perfect fall day yesterday…looks like 2000-2500’ has the most color right now. I would guess this will peak in the next 10 days.

.

I think it’s well behind a lot of my other year pictures.  I’m thinking October 5-15 time frame.  There’s some color but it’s generally orange tint.  Lots of green too.

FB reminds me daily of other year photos I’ve posted and a couple look like we were nearing peak or at last the first peak.  Bright red/orange mixed with green two years ago this time of year.

How are the leaves doing? I am hoping peak can hold off until early next week in VT.

I think you’ll be ok. To me, it seems a little delayed. But then again, I always seem to think it’s slow or dull and then one day I look out and everything seems to have exploded in color.

My original plan to stay with a friend fell through. I am lucky I found a room that is reasonably affordable in Enosburg Falls but JFC at the rates in general. Mine was still steep but it could have been worse. Either way, I better get some snowliage out of the deal LOL.

Whitefield airport weather station reported 24 degrees this morning. Everything is coated with a thick layer of frost...it's a wee bit nippy out

Nice to see you checking in.  Are you still recovering from knee surgery?  We hit 28° this morning.  We had been fogged out of frosts earlier so straight to hard freeze for us.

Lowest I saw was PQI at 23; Estcourt Station must've been flirting with 20.  Had 25 at my frost pocket, enough to put 1/16" ice on the catch bucket under the eaves.

Knee is doing better. ACL reconstruction, I'm learning after the fact, takes around 2 years to fully recover from...and the knee still won't ever feel like it did prior to the injury. I think, had I been given all the information, I would have opted to not have surgery. I only had 1, 10 min appointment with the knee surgeon to make a decision. I'm not a professional athlete nor an adrenaline junky, so I actually don't need an ACL. And I could always opt to wear a brace for hiking or easy skiing. I've learned that our health care system heards people around like cattle and the object is to get as many people seen and medicated or scheduled for surgery/procedures as possible to keep the money flowing.

I also learned after the fact I had an option to choose from 3 surgeons. Each surgeon has a specific method they prefer to use for ACL Reconstruction, and each surgeon has a different rehab plan for the patients. I was only able to speak with 1 surgeon of the 3 for 10mins and now I know that was not enough time to be able to make the best decision for myself. Hopefully this info can help someone else in the future.

Just food for thought for any jo schmo out there who is faced ACL reconstruction or another type of surgery that isn't mandatory...know your options, ask all the questions, and don't let any medical professional pressure you.

This, in spades.  15 years ago, my wife was suffering "Haglund's deformity" - heel bone spurs damaging the Achilles tendon - on both feet.  She was shown methodologies of 2 specialists.  The first would sever the Achilles to access the spurs, then reattach it after removing the spurs.  The second would split the tendon lengthwise and spread it to get access.  She chose door #2, mainly because the sever/reattach seemed more hazardous.  The 2-weeks-shorter rehab after the split method was also a factor.  Surgeries on each foot were completely successful.

Not sure if this is still needed, but the Baptist Hospital in Boston has some great experts in knee repair. Should you ever have the need.

I had my right one reconstructed 16 years ago.  It was needed since it was my ACL, MCL and meniscus. That took about 20 months to feel totally 100%.  All these years later I don't even think about it and it feels totally normal.  I tore my left ACL 10 years ago, but it was only the ACL.  I saw 2 doctors, one suggested surgery, one didn't.  Since it wasn't bothering or limiting me at all, I decided not to have the surgery.  I wear a soft brace to ski or play any sports with cutting motions, but it honestly doesn't bother one bit.  Hopefully yours will feel 100% soon.

In the Mickey Mantle bio "The Last Boy", it's stated that Mantle almost certainly tore his ACL when he stepped on an OF drain cover during the 1951 WS, probably long before ACL surgery was available.  A person in a non-athletic vocation might've just shrugged it off and would have no issues, but the stresses and strains of a world-class athlete are different.  Late in his MLB career, Mantle had stated that he never again took the field without pain following the injury.
