Never thought I would see the day I would have to wear a jacket in the first part of August but that day has arrived. 50s most of the afternoon after the rain arrived. High only made it to 62 and if that holds it will be a new record. Old was 63..

Same here.  Picked up 1.75" of rain to go with that.

I feel like all of the corn, etc in the Midwest is helping to save us so far.  Puts out a lot of moisture which makes it more difficult to heat up.  A way around it would be to get a drought to set in early enough to take out a good amount of crops, like what happened in 2012.  Maybe there will come a day when the corn effect getrridden by what's happening in the background, but we're not there yet.  Until then, I think we're going to be more prone to ridiculous warmth in the other seasons.

It seems like the Midwest has seen more than its fair share of heat in recent years, no? Not sure how much hotter y'all want it to get. Top ten hottest summer lists in Ohio and Michigan are dominated by recent summers.

I'm talking more about the crops tending to put a lid on high end max temps in summer.  How many times have the above cities reached 100+ from 2013 until now?

Only Toledo, earlier this year. But none of those cities reach 100+ with any degree of frequency. I think you're right about part of the cause - its simply more humid today than it was during some of the past heatwaves. But I do think some of it just comes down to more reliable equipment and better techniques for measuring the temperature. Even 1988... do a little research on the HO-83 that was in common use at the time at these first order climate sites... it was hot, no doubt, but there's a plethora of scientific studies showing a considerable warm bias related to that device on Tmax, especially on sunny days with light winds. It was so bad NOAA/NWS had to replace it in the mid 1990s.

I think it's going to continue to be harder to see 100+ days with modern shielded, fan-aspirated equipment properly sited on the ground... in the 30s-50s, it was very common for city and airport records to be collected on building rooftops, which have since been shown to have a considerable warm bias. I think, to some extent, this effect was known at the time, but it was just deemed more convenient to house all of the equipment together and the anemometer needed to be located way above ground for reliability.

One of the most pleasant summer's  here I can recall in recent memory. Was concerned about a real scorcher with the early heat in June, but July came in moderate with enough rainfall to keeps us going. Prior to this year the weather in summer has tended to be warm and dry, but nothing extreme by any stretch. Biggest out of whack anomalies I've seen recently, non summer, is the warm non snowy Decembers. Be nice to end that pattern.

I just remember growing up and years like 1988 & 1995 were considered the gold standard for summertime heat with media driven to a frenzy about it being a once-in-a-lifetime deadly heat wave. It's crazy to me to see so many recent summers post similar, or warmer, mean temperatures than those years.

I remember '88 well, it was the hottest summer by far that I've experienced.  '12 gave it a good run.  Guess I don't sense the mean very well, as it doesn't seem like it's gotten any warmer at all since I was a youngin'.

There’s a difference between a top ten warmest summer from consistently high dew points causing the overnight lows to stay above average and a top ten warmest summer from extreme afternoon highs. Around here, I can have a well above normal summer mean from having lows around 70 and highs in the mid 80s, which we’ve seen a lot of in the last decade. That’s hardly newsworthy. It also helps that top ten warmest or coldest in the summer takes a much smaller departure from average than the winter.

I don't recall anything quite like '95 before or after that summer. Felt ill and drained most of that summer and I was a young man of 34. Could not wait for fall. I'm not a stats guy, simply feel and instincts sports and weather.

Gonna try to make it to 2023 before using ac again

It definitely gets easier this time of year when the sun goes down so much earlier. Over here the sun doesn’t set until 9:20 in June so when it’s hot outside, I’m usually in bed by the time it really starts to cool down. lol

Seriously?  Those days when MDW hit 100 were probably similar downtown.

Shaded street, two blocks from the lake. Could have been shacked up with the GF on those hot days. She has a pool. So I guess there are caveats.

Just had a quick hitting downpour that quickly dropped another 0.36".  Up to 0.54" since last evening.  3.01" for Aug now.

It's actually been fairly dry around here this month.

ORD only had 0.44" in Aug through yesterday, which is over 2" below average.
