Number of 100 degree days in August in Central Park:

1944 - 1955: 10

1956 - Present: 1

Those were the days before the tree growth around the castle. So NYC could reach 100° nearly as often as Newark. It was also the era when 100° heat happened more frequently in August. Since 2010, most of our 100° days have been in June and July. The 100° heat this August was a first for the record warm post 2010 climate.

This dry pattern started abuptly last year after the absurdly wet July- Oct period. Nov and Dec came in with under 2" of rain each month here...Jan - May were close to normal with the dryness returning in June for many of us.

I don't keep records but my recollection is it started to dry out in mid October. I was well below through your average period and it just keeps drying out. Parched...

When will a major station in the area hit 100 other then ewr?

Freehold-Marlboro and Somerset Airport have had 5-6 days reaching 100° like Newark this summer. But they  are in more rural areas. Several NYC micronet stations have 5 days reaching 100° also.

Models seem to converging in the idea that the heaviest rains over the next week will favor areas to our south and east. So if this is correct, then we may need to wait for the tropics to become active to end the drought. This has been the  driest July 1st to August 11th on record at places like Newark.

Yeah, very dry conditions for August today. Northern NJ could see dewpoints falling into the 30s this afternoon.

At some point fire issues may be a thing with the continued dry conditions especially if things don't change heading into September/October.

This is the first time that the tropics have been so quiet from July into mid-August since 1999. We also had a hot and dry summer here that year. Maybe we could get a tropical soaker like Floyd in September this year.

75/ 56 and just gorgeous as skies are clearing.  Mid upper 80s today and the 90s streak ending for those who continued Wed and Thu.  Heat capped next 7 - 8 days. Sat (8/13) and Sun (81/4) looking marvelous dry / low humidity and highs a bit below normal in the 80s.  Mon (8/15)  , Tue ( 8/16) and Wed (8/17) cut off / ULL moving through in s some capacity as trough closes off with Rockies / Plains ridge ballooning into the Pac NW and the Western Atlantic Ridge stubborn and pushing against the trough into the East coast.  Models meandering the rain in and around the area, still to be worked out how much rain does or doesnt fall.  Potential there from some soaking.

By the end of next week Fri (8/19) the Western Atlantic ridge is pushing west and forcing a more humid / warm southerly flow that with it comes its own chance for Florida style showers and storms.   Overall warm to hot and humid last 10 days of the month.
