Let's get the snow down first, then we can worry about losing it later.

It looks like there may be a series of weak clipper type systems over the next week or so that could reinforce the new snow pack. Should keep the ground white for at least the next few weeks you'd think.

Been an overcast day here today, with the sun dimly visible at times. Have had virga overhead since last night. The precip hole is slowly shrinking towards the DVN site, so we should finally see our first flakes over the next few hours.

And for fun 12z Monday 384 hr. GFS shows a dramatic warm up in the Midwest and t storms in the Mississippi Valley. Have to watch this as we progress through January. With Nina I expect wide swings in temps particularly when Nina is not producing the favored 8 out of 10 warmer winters that usually come with it per Gil Sebenste's reasoning.

Late January warm up is gone on the 12z GFS. And this....

was an epic fail.

Ensembles said the OP was full of it anyway. It's sort of reverse thing, when in warm winters we're always staring down fantasy cold patterns in la la land that never seem to materialize. This winter it's been flipped it seems.

And hey no worries about the epic fail, it worked out for the best. :snowman:

lol, this is one of the few times in life when you're glad you've failed.

D7 storm still looks warmer on the GGEM.

I hope Detroit can handle a few inches of snow without going ape****, since that's where I'll be landing in Saturday on my way to Madison. I'm starting to expect bad things tho since it is such a busy airport :/

GFS is spitting out -33 °F at MSN at hour 288, 4 degrees shy of the all time record

The real cold looks to start after the Saturday clipper, GFS shows near zero Sunday morning and -8 °F Monday morning. A very brief warmup associated with another clipper than happens, followed by lots of sub-zero temps, including -17 °F Wednesday morning.

Turtle you should be fine, Detroit is excellent at snow removal, they have been ever since the fiasco with the 1999 Blizzard.

Our 2 inches of snow last night and this morning brought us up closer to the 30" for the season threshold. Hopefully we can nickel and dime ourselves up to the 40" mark by March or April. Since our average snowfall around here is 35", no matter what happens from here on out this will be considered a near average winter at the least.

South Bend has received 41.9" of snow for January, through yesterday. This puts them at the 3rd snowiest January on record, based off records starting in 1940 via the IWX site. Of course they're under a LES warning right now, which should easily put them into 2nd place when this event is finished.

Top 5 snowiest Januaries since 1940 at SBN

86.1"...1978

45.3"...1959

45.1"...1979

41.3"...1982

40.0"...1985
