This summer is starting out with EWR having warmer temperature departures than LGA. We saw a pattern like this last summer. It’s a reversal from LGA having the higher departures from 2018 to 2020. So our stations are very sensitive to prevailing wind directions since they are located so close to the Atlantic and LI Sound.

Clouds today may break this afternoon and warm things up into the mid 80s.  Onshore flow Wed and Thu keep the furnace to our south and west before a brief intrusion later Thu overnight (6/16) and through Friday (6/17).  Trough digs in Saturday (6/18) through early next week Tue (6/21) making way for what appears to be dry and very pleasant and one of the coolest fathers day in a while.  70s.  Beyond there height rise and the ridge pushes the trough out.  While the hottest/core of the heat looks to mainly stay south and west, the period 6/22 and into later next week looks hot and perhaps the first heat wave for the area.

Pretty impressive omega pattern for the 2nd half of a June. A piece of the Great Lakes heat comes east with 90s potential on Friday. Then a quick temperature drop to lows in the 50s and maybe 40s interior for Sunday morning. We’ll have to see how much heat can come east later in June when the ridge flexes to our west again.

2014 was the last time that Newark had a top 10 lowest number of 90° days.

33 days reaching 90° is the new average for EWR from 2010 to 2021. So 2017 and 2014 were the only significantly below average years during this period.

2013 had that tremendous surge with the W Atlantic RIdge in July then petered out beyond there.  2009 / 2004 in the 20 year expansion as well with 2003 also kind of below the norm.  The signal for that ridge being anchored into the Plains and GL/MW is more reminiscent of the warmer ones where chuncks of the heat come east in longer durations as the summer progresses.

The Newark area seems to be the hottest place in the summer for the NY metro area, maybe parts of the city can be as hot. As for Newark, no surprise with all the concrete, industrial facilities and missing out on the sea breeze.

Parts of NYC away from the sea breeze are just as hot as the Newark area is. The NYC micronet is doing a good job at filling in the temperatures between the airports which are right on the water. The record heat on May 31st was impressive around NYC and Newark.

Perhaps a long-range clue in this news item -- Yellowstone River flooding sees that river higher than at any point in recorded history, 1918 was the previous high. Assuming that to be in the late spring flood season also, 1918 became quite a hot summer and holds the record of 104 F for August. Late July to mid-August was the hottest portion of the summer; June 1918  and early July had some rather cool weather at times.

Good reference 93 had some flooding too

On some days they can have a breeze from Newark Bay but generally yes. The hottest place in the entire metro might be central Queens near Maspeth/Corona. I believe Bluewave posted a map some time ago. LGA can get the NE breeze from the sound and JFK obviously has the seabreeze almost every day. Central Park would also be a regular hot spot if there wasn’t the issue with the thermometer.

EWR is  influence by a "cooling" southerly flow component from Newark Bay. LGA and  other places saw their temp reach the 90s those times and EWR was stalled in the 80s those days.  In recent years as the WAR built in this occrured. Bluewave pointed that out when LGA had the stronger positive temperature departures.

Yeah, Corona Queens and Newark both made it to 103°on 6-30-21. It was the warmest June temperature on record at Newark. The new NYC micronet is a valuable addition to our local weather observations.

where I live on Staten Island a west nw wind makes my area as hot as Newark NJ...w/sw winds make northern Queens hotter...N/NW winds make southern Queens hotter...
