Did you notice something odd Chris that temperature records at JFK for hottest summers seem to correspond better between JFK and EWR than they do between JFK and LGA?  Also, if we take mins out of the equation and just focus on number of 90 degree days how far up does 2020 rank for that at LGA?  I think we'll also see a stronger correspondence there between EWR and JFK than either with LGA.

Also what would it take to see  a repeat of a 2010 kind of summer? Something after a strong el nino?

2020 was more about the high number of 95° days at LGA than the 90° days. Each station from JFK to LGA to EWR has different rankings based on the dominant wind direction. All 3 airports are on the water and subject to sea breezes at times. Obviously, JFK is the sea breeze king among the 3.

Is there any way to project where Central Park would rank on these lists if their equipment was sited better?

I know-- I just expected a few showers like earlier at night lol

One of the strikes caused an insanely loud rumble of thunder where I live and it happened simultaneously with the strike so it was very close to my building. Certainly no need for an alarm this morning!

wow, I fully expected to hear fire sirens, but so far nothing.  Looks like the thunderstorms have moved on and we're back to foggy lol

Big easterly flow pattern setting up on all the ensembles. We have our storms undercutting the omega block this week. Nice downpour with the thunderstorm this morning. Then the block shifts to SE Canada next week. 500 mb heights may approach 590 dm to our north with a big cutoff to our south. So an over the top warm up with cooler onshore flow here. Very Niña-like pattern for May.

Love the heat. Bring it on. Nothing better than warm summer nights outside.

When you have to wear long sleeves and pants because of the mosquitos? We're not going to stop the plethora of stinging critters so if we have to protect ourselves it shouldn't have to be unpleasant because y'all want heat. Nights are supposed to be in the 50s and 60s, not the 70s.

Here's an explanation I found regarding why it was so loud (lots of discussion about how loud it was in twitter):

Good morning Liberty. It might be a bit simplistic but what if you did a years ratio comparison, pre ASOS, to other Metropolitan sites than moved it forward in time? Not sure if all Metro or only select sites would be best. I keep thinking that Don and/or BW may have done projections at times. Stay well, as always …

It’s all on page #3 of the local climate change thread.

I've often experienced that critters and mosquitos go away when it's very hot and very dry.

That's the kind of energy that fixes many things.

Very hot and very dry is ideal, even if you have to water....no critters, no mosquitoes, no pollen, no nothing.  That will also give you your cool nights while in the day time the dry ground and wall to wall sunshine and downsloping winds make you feel glad to be alive

This was a great read.  Thanks!

I live on Roosevelt Island and figured that the unique rolling-type sound was simply the sound waves echoing off of the buildings on either side of the East River, but this explanation makes more sense.  Quite a wake-up call this AM!!

Good morning all, the photo below was received from a local news outlet. Even though it was from a previous strike. The booming woke me and much of my neighborhood also. Stay well, as always ….

NE flow with light rain and low 50s near the coast today. At least this isn’t the Memorial Day weekend record low maxes like we got last year.
