ValpoVike
Ha! The NWS is doubling down on my 6500' call Key Messages ➔ Red Flag Warning in effect today ➔ Significant heavy, wet snow Fri-Sat. ➔ Most confident in heavy wet snow above 6,500 ft elevation ➔ Much uncertainty remains for elevations below 6,500 ft in terms of snow accumulation
smokeybandit
In the three years I've lived here, my back yard has always done well when there's a rain/snow line concern.

ValpoVike
Does anyone have access to Euro Kuchera data? It looks like GFS is around 12:1 ratio and I am interested in seeing what the Euro says. I think 12:1 is quite generous.

CO SciFan
Wow, I was outside winterizing the garden and it was like I could feel the instant the front arrived and my temps plummeted around 25 degrees in 20 minutes. Here's the graph from my backyard: 2
mayjawintastawm
The thing that really, REALLY makes this weird is what a dramatic change this is. It's one thing if it's the tail end of a snowy, cold season. But I think this is only about Denver's third Winter Storm Warning of the whole season; we've had more fires than we have winter storms this year; the last measurable snow at KDEN was MARCH 16th; and May is averaging +3 to +4 F compared to climatology around the area. Just completely incongruous.
Chinook
all right. here we go. High temps on 5/19. not shown on this plot are high temps of about 86-91 in the Denver metro area. down to 42 degrees. There is a bit of drizzle
mayjawintastawm
Updated list, and people can put predictions, snow totals and number of branches down when all is said and done: ValpoVike: 7310' Smokeybandit: 6300' Skierinvermont 5700' Mayjawintastawm: 5650' guessing 5.8" (will depend on my kids measuring, so likely inaccurate) N1vek: 5500' Chinook: 5110' CoScifan: 5105'
ValpoVike
I am around 5", but it has been holding there since about 8am. It seems like the rate of snowfall is matching the rate of melting.
smokeybandit
I can't believe NWS had me in the 12-18" last night. Plenty of needed precip is falling, but I'd be surprised if more than couple sloppy inches accumulates.
n1vek
Transitioned to snow here in Arvada a bit ago. Light slushy accumulation on the grass and deck so far.
CO SciFan
We've barely had any precipitation so far here. Hoping we can still get some good moisture and holding out hope for the next phase. Sent from my SM-G998U1 using Tapatalk
Chinook
My place started getting snow at maybe 5:00 or a bit later. I think I have some decent accumulated rain of 0.40-0.65" (not sure)

Damn impressive.
ValpoVike
It is a challenge to estimate this snowfall, but I think we likely received 16”. Although the most depth that I measured was 9.5”. Good accumulation Thursday overnight that melted…more on Friday that melted…and a very decent amount last night. I think my 6500’ call was busted. edit: my weather station logged 1.51” precip since Thursday.
n1vek
Max depth on my deck was 4” but it was melting the whole way at 5500’ in Arvada. Snapped the crown off a maple in the backyard and have several other large limbs on the ground/roof.
Chinook
I think I got less than 1" on the trees and the grass. I think I got over 0.75" on precipitation. According to the NWS, I guess my area still has "Chance Snow Showers then Slight Chance T-storms" tonight.
smokeybandit
This is by far the shortest loiter time I've ever seen on a major snowstorm. Most of it is all melted already.
skierinvermont
Depth on grass was this morning 8" so guessing received about 9-10"
n1vek
Anyone have a good total precip map for this entire event? Curious how different parts of the metro did.

Crazy how fast it melts in May. A few years ago we received 44” on May 19th and by the end of the following day it was all gone and 75 degrees
Chinook
Colorado Springs to the Palmer Divide probably had a lot of broken tree branches. I really don't know for sure. I think Denver got 1.20" of precipitation.
n1vek
It's been a nice run for moisture. Hopefully the Tuesday night "event" delivers and we keep this good luck steak running into June.
n1vek
Lovely soaking tonight in Arvada. That band out north of the city has been stationary and dumping for awhile now.
Chinook
I was away on a trip. Then I came back to DIA and got my car and all this rain happened. So, not very fun driving. It was 42 degrees. Major shock. It was 90 degrees when I left DIA.
smokeybandit
3/4" for the event. Could have been more as I got dry slotted this morning. But 3/4" is so sorely needed.

mayjawintastawm
Late entry: we got about 6" from the snow event and lost much of a 40 year old ash tree in our front yard along with power loss for 27 hours. Yuck. Over the last 6 days we've had just about another inch of rain. Total melted precipitation in May was almost 3 inches! I've been traveling 10 of the last 12 days so didn't see much of it.
