The Euro seasonal is going for a repeat of last summer. High dewpoint ridge east of New England. It could allow more tropical systems to get stuck underneath like we saw last summer. We had 2 tropical and 2 post tropical systems affect our region. There were a total of 21 named storms last year. The Euro has 18-19 named storms for this year. The big story for us was the historic flooding with Ida and Henri.

I have feeling we take a real hit this summer. Gloria in 85 was the last real hurricane to hit Long Island. We are more then due

that belt of anomalously poleward subtropical ridges has been a theme for the past 5 years

I know it’s OT but Sandy was a 946mb storm when it struck ACY and we were in the right front quadrant. It’s the worst storm that many of us will see in our lifetimes. It was a Cat 3 intensity storm but spread over a huge area so the top winds were reduced, but the surge stayed huge.

Isais, although a TS, left it’s mark. Gloria was hauling, and hit at low tide. The stars aligned for Sandy

This follows my thoughts developed over the last 40 years that tropical and subtropical storms are heat pumps. The storms pull heat out of the tropics and bring it poleward so with the higher number of storms over the last 20 years there needs to be more deep, southerly reaching troughs to bring the cool air down to balance things out. (How far off are my thoughts?)

Of course Sandy was on another level. Hence the 600 year reoccurrence rate. But it made landfall in New Jersey.  I’m talking about a hurricane with an intact tropical center and that was Gloria. One thing that Sandy didn’t have was an eyewall with wind gusts over 100mph. When we have another carol or 38 the damage to the electrical grid is going to be a true disaster.

A 38 repeat would see some areas out of power for months....
