low of 20 last night, it snowed Sat/Sun/Mon, and now this for Tues/Wed:

Winter Weather Advisory until 11:00AM Wednesday

* WHAT...Light wintry mix. A coating of snow and sleet, and a light glaze of ice from freezing rain.

* WHERE...In Maryland, Washington County. In Virginia, Frederick VA and Clarke Counties. In West Virginia, Berkeley and Jefferson Counties.

* WHEN...From 2 AM to 11 AM EDT Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.

* AFFECTED AREAS: WASHINGTON ... FREDERICK ... CLARKE ... BERKELEY ... JEFFERSON

Instructions:

Slow down and use caution while traveling. When venturing outside, watch your first few steps taken on steps, sidewalks, and driveways, which could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.

This will be expanded

So DCA doing it 7-10 degree variance thing again and let’s discuss recent events.  Two nights of very windy where variances were 1-3 degrees.  So, the wind homogenizes  the air and there is not a big difference.  What that has  to do with tonight is that without the wind DCA can’t homogenize and/or radiate correctly.. Best guess as to why is that there is an obstruction or hinderance of some form preventing DCA from doing what other observations are able to do.

low of 25

3 straight mornings of 25 or lower. Looking forward to the warmup today.

Warm air must be moving in aloft because it's actually warmer here then there. I've noticed this since I've been here. Days where warmer air is moving in it's warmer here at higher elevation. One morning back in December it was 41 here but down the road in this little river valley it was frosty and 31.

That does happen, but also the trough is exiting stage right and the warmer air is right on the heels coming in from the west, so the cold is hanging on over here a tad longer. Wind completely died down here overnight with clear skies, so perfect for temps to drop and plenty of frost to form.

Subject: Changes in Weather Balloon Launch Frequency Effective March
29,
 2022

Effective March 29 and until further notice, the National Weather
Service
is reducing the frequency of weather balloon launches at several
upper air
locations in the United States due to a global supply chain
disruption of
helium and a temporary issue with the contract of one hydrogen
supplier.
The National Weather Service launches weather balloons from 101 upper
air
sites throughout the United States and the Caribbean, using helium to
inflate the balloons at 12 of these sites. The agency converted the
remaining sites to hydrogen because it is cost effective and a more
reliable gas option.

Approximately 9% of the total upper air sites are currently affected
by
the gas shortage and temporary contract issue, including 5 of the 12
helium sites and 4 hydrogen sites. We anticipate that these issues
will
impact additional upper air sites. To ensure there is enough gas
on-hand
to launch balloons in support of forecasts during hazardous weather,
the
affected sites have either reduced launches to once per day or
suspended
flights during calm weather days. This temporary adjustment will not
impact weather forecasts and warnings. The affected sites benefit from
data
collected by balloons launched from neighboring upper air sites. Be
assured we will take all steps possible to mitigate the supply chain
and
contracting issues.

Radiosondes are instruments attached to weather balloons that send
back a
wide range of upper atmospheric data to support weather forecasts,
including temperature, dew point, relative humidity, barometric
pressure,
wind speed, wind direction. Radiosondes are one of many technologies
that
collect earth observation data for use in weather modeling and
forecasting. Data is also collected from instruments aboard
commercial
aircraft, surface observing stations, satellites, radars, and buoys.

The National Weather Service will continue converting sites to
hydrogen
where locations, leases and safe operations allow, and as funding
becomes
available.

Had a little sleet this morning and now it's sunny and 60!  I looked at the obs map and saw 40s in Garrett Co while parts of WV not far away are in the 80s

Those southerly and southeasterly winds are racing down the back side of the apps and heating up western WV big time! 82 in Charleston and Huntington right now. Meanwhile, it is 60 here.
