Eleven consecutive months of above normal temps coming to an end.

December is on track for the first below normal temperature month of 2010 here in Westford and probably other parts of Southern New England. Like many locations, the last time I had a below temperature month was December 2009. I've been taking observations at this location (WES 507) for 25 years and have never had such a long consecutive stretch of above or below monthly temps. This is really a rare event, especially for New England where weather patterns change so frequently. Here are my monthly average temperatures for 2010 with 25 year departures from normal.

Jan 25.2 (+0.2)

Feb 29.7 (+2.6)

Mar 41.3 (+5.7)

Apr 51.5 (+4.4)

May 62.6 (+4.8)

Jun 69.7 (+2.6)

Jul 76.5 (+4.5)

Aug 72.0 (+1.6)

Sep 65.9 (+4.3)

Oct 50.0 (+0.3)

Nov 40.6 (+0.6)

The beat goes on in Maine ... PWM currently +1.3, BGR +2.1, CAR +9.2 <---- 9.2 not a typo

14 straight for CAR, though June was only +0.01. That includes 2 all time warmest ( Nov. 09, Apr. 10) and 4 months at #2 assuming 12/10 holds serve this last week. Jan/Feb/Mar were all 2nd mildest, records back thru 1939. CAR will avg between +4 and +5 for all of 2010.

Yes Maine has been a different story this December with upper levels winds mostly unfavorable for true arctic air delivery. Frequent low pressure in the maritimes and points well northeast has had a modifying effect on much of the state. The cold air delivery has been better in areas to the west and south of the pine tree state.

Yeah usually -NAO's lead to above-average temperatures up in ME, especially when it's a fairly strong -NAO signal...this leads to unfavorable wind trajectories like you mentioned.

The elephant did not die, he relocated north.

CON: +0.5

PWM: +1.6

BGR: +2.1

CAR: +8.8

HUL: +5.9

MLT: +5.3

CAR finishes the year almost exactly 2F milder than its previous mildest year (2001, IIRC - numbers are elsewhere at the moment.) 2010 stands all alone at the top; the span between it and #2 is the same as between #2 and #11.

December here had less of a cold departure from normal, but still the first and only one in 2010. Being a little further north tempered the departure compared to the major SNE climo sites.

Recorded 51.1 for the average temp in 2010 which is my warmest year on record. This is 2.5 degrees above my 25 year normal.

+8.8 is pretty dang ridiculous. I bet the motels didn't close down their swimming pools.

It sure is, 2nd mildest in their 71 yr of reocrd. Feb departure was even greater, something like +10, still 2nd to the awesome +14.7 of 1981. When that month ended, CAR's 6 mildest Feb days, and the only ones 50 or above, were all from '81 (plus two more tied the previous record of 49.) 1994 now holds the record (61), but '81 has something like 8 of the top 10. 2010 was amazing in that it was so far above normal without any super torches - high for the month was mid-40s.
