625 PM EDT Thu Aug 4 2022

The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has issued a

* Tornado Warning for...
  Southern Harford County in northern Maryland...
  Southeastern Baltimore County in northern Maryland...

* Until 645 PM EDT.

* At 624 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
  was located over Back River, moving east at 35 mph.

  HAZARD...Tornado.

  SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation.

  IMPACT...For those in the direct path of a tornado touchdown,
           flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without
           shelter. Damage to roofs, siding, and windows may occur.
           Mobile homes may be damaged or destroyed. Tree damage is
           likely.

* This dangerous storm will be near...
  Bowleys Quarters around 630 PM EDT.

Other locations impacted by this tornadic thunderstorm include
Edgemere.

For those unaware, 2 of the 4 victims died.  It always upsets me to see people injured or killed that hide under trees during a lightning storm.  I learned as a little kid to never stand under trees, well before I became a weather enthusiast.   So for this to happen in a metropolitan city it is upsetting when there should have been rumbles of thunder preceding the strike that signaled "we better get some shelter".  But I wasn't there.  I also read that they were from Wisconsin and I am unsure of how prevalent lighting is from their hometown.    Maybe this was a strike well in advance or after the actual cell overhead.  Posting this to point out the dangers involved.  Prayers go out to the victims, family and friends of this tragedy.

What you just said is why NWS tags SVR warning text with "seek shelter inside a sturdy structure".

   Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent

   SUMMARY...Isolated to widely scattered gusts primarily ranging from
   45-60 mph are possible with the stronger storms.  The wet
   microbursts will be capable of isolated pockets of wind damage.

   DISCUSSION...Visible-satellite imagery shows convective initiation
   has recently ensued across southeast VA and it becoming imminent
   southeast of D.C. as of 230 EDT.  Surface conditions are very warm
   and humid with temperatures rising into the lower 90s with mid-upper
   70s dewpoints.  Modifying forecast soundings indicates around 3000
   J/kg MLCAPE is located over eastern VA northward through the
   Chesapeake Bay/Delmarva vicinity.  The ample buoyancy and high PW (2
   inches) amid a weak wind profile supports a pulse-thunderstorm
   threat this afternoon into the early evening.  Strong to locally
   severe gusts (45-60 mph) are probable with the stronger wet
   microbursts, and localized pockets of wind damage will likely
   accompany these stronger gusts.  Small to marginally severe hail
   (0.5 to 1.0 inch in diameter) may occur with the stronger updraft
   pulses through the late afternoon.

Hopefully I can get some of this rain to the NNK… storms seem to just fizzle and break when they get close.

Right? By the time you get to the "Oh, SHIT!" moment....it could be/might be TOO LATE for you. If it's THAT blackish/greyish/greenish in the sky when this type of weather approaches? My ass is gonna be in our HALF BASEMENT. I love to photograph and do video of wx phenom, but not to the detriment of me remaining upright and vertical...  :yikes:

This x100. Had several young friends when I was a kid get struck by lightning when standing under a tree....one died. I guess I thought that, logically, most of us have been taught NOT to stand under trees when thunderstorms descend....maybe that isn't a safe assumption anymore. I experienced a direct lightning strike to the front peak of my childhood home in PA when I was a teenager...the immediate thunder crash and literal shaking to the foundation of our 100-year old home, combined with (literally!) EVERY electrical appliance in the house spiking/surging/failing/screaming was an experience I won't forget for the rest of my life. And because of it...I have a VERY healthy respect for lightning, always.
