As a 13 year old wx geek I couldn't believe my ears when I heard snow was breaking out south of us, on Easter morning March 29th 1970, on my NY station wx radio. We flipped right after breakfast and had 6 inches. Another snowstorm hit a day later.

We had 11" of mid-20s powder on 3/29 and 3" paste 2 days later.  My (future - married June '71) wife was at a sunrise service at the Wanaque Reservoir dam in NNJ and recalls a cold gray windy time - snow started later that morning.  I was just learning to ski and after a couple noisy scraping days at Great Gorge (staff had to shovel snow onto the lift exit so we could access the snowmaking trails), skiing on quiet powder on 3/30 was exquisite.

What an end to winter on that storm. I honestly deep down thought we had a chance for that this year. Blah.

Nothing will beat back this direction in late March 1956. Here's the old Ashland coop not far from me:

Oak Ridge Reservoir, about 10 miles west of where I grew up and 160' higher.  Also had obs at 7 AM.

I have no memory of the 3/17 storm but my dad measured 23.5" of new snow about 7:30 AM on the 19th with accum continuing.  I call it a 24" storm.  Morris Plains, 20 miles south and 300' lower, reported 23".  The "sticky snow" on 4/8 brought another 12" and broke or bent some trees that had survived the Jan 1953 ice storm.

We had flipped to snow by this point...around 10am we flipped.

I feel like smoking a cigar and sipping a nice bourbon just thinking about that storm.  I'm sure folks gets sick of the nostalgic conversation about it, especially if their area did not get hit, or maybe they weren't here for it....but that was the biggest bag of WTF that I can remember and it's not even close. Nobody...I mean nobody forgets that moment when they looked out the window and saw it flip to snow. I sure as hell do not forget.

I don't, and we only got either the weak event a few hours ahead or the pre-bombing of the big system - 7.5" on about 18 hr of light-moderate SN, also the longest commute on my 45 miles Farmington to Gardiner.  Your pics from the height of that event are among my favorite snow scenes.

My only regret in that storm was I didn’t see the snow between about 1am and 6am. That was obscene rates there. Still, seeing thunder snow right as we were getting out of school around 2:15pm was pretty awesome. Vivid flash and loud crack just about 2 seconds behind it while it was absolutely choking aggregates. Couldn’t see more than about 200 yards at that point.
