this one is definitely one of my favorites, and my avatar... nothing tops 78 imho, top 5 are probably 78, Feb 82, Jan 96, March 93, Feb 13... although there are a bunch in there that could be in that list, but in terms of memory, those are my favorite ones...

I've been trying to remember which storm it was, had to be I think in 01, based on where I lived and worked, but snow began around 9-10 in Fairfield where we were redoing a bank, and by noon, we were told to come back to the shop, but the Merritt and Rt 8 were completely gridlocked, took us 6 hours to get home, there was thunderanow as well and got about 20" in Waterbury...iirc, that winter was a good one too, just have a foggy memory for the few years around the turn of the millennium

Feb 5th 2001. Sounds like it to a T. With the amounts, start time and thundersnow/rates....it can only be Feb 5th 01. Thats my #1 all time. To this day i haven seen flakes that big, like baseball size. And a CG strike that hit my neighbors back yard. Extremely heavy thundersnow and thundersleet.

17", first of three 16"+ events that year - Feb-Mar total was 89.3" that year.  Nearly vacuumed a partridge with the snowblower at 6 AM on the 6th near the end of the storm here.  Dog was on the trolley and began barking - tie-out from trolley was buried in the new snow and he felt trapped.  Started in with the machine but the dog was getting frantic so I stopped the blower and took two quick steps when the bird burst out of the snow, whacking my leg a few times with its wings.

Feb. 2013 was the most memorable one down here. 18" in five hours, 30" total. Thundersnow, too. One of my favorites.

that's awesome, I have video where I caught the thunder snow, and had a ton of pictures but my external hard drive crashed, no I have to try and revive like 800megs of video and pictures of all the past 15 years... wish I had more pics of 78 though, that was amazing, and how big the drifts were, I was a wee lad, so they were over my head

20-Year anniversary of one of the biggest and most impactful storm of my life. March 4-6th 2001.

There is more information here:

I was going to do a big blog-type post of the events of those 3 days but i don't have the time right now. I'll leave these images here for now. This storm could have been up there with the great 1888 storm but warmer and a farther north track spared the big cities from feet of snow and was shifted well inland. Despite, a lot of sleet/zr for CT most of the state still picked up a solid foot to 1.5 feet.

And the infamous video someone made of the crazy hype surrounding this storm. And from memory i can attest it was this bad.

I think best thump I've ever had. 16.5" and most of that in 3 hrs. We had at least 4-5"/hr rates at one point. I literally had no semblance of visibility out the window. Blue hills had nearly 0.40" in 1 hr of melted liquid. Insane. That fell right at 32.0 as well.

About 20 hours of moderate snow here, 9.5" total for 3/5-6/01.  The real action that month came after the equinox - 16" on 22-23 and then 19" on 30-31, brought the depth up to 48", Farmington's tallest on record so late in the season.

I was in Newry for both Feb 01 and March 01. Just incredible

The sheer duration still impresses me, from what i can recall it was about 58 hours.

We had snow to start briefly, but then went to rain and sleet literally for almost 24 hrs. Back to snow late night into the 6th and got a good dump then.

20 year anniversary! I did fine in Wilmington with like 20" after a brief start as sleet and rain, but it was orgasmic at my present locale....like 30".

I hated that event. One of the many events over the past few years that slighted my area, while crushing most of E MA.

I fumbled that one. Figured it was congrats freak up until the day before. And certainly did not expect that much snow.
