NW Trend For the Win! (1/21-1/22 2022 storm) Obs Thread

This is one of my favorite snows ever. The emotional roller coaster leading up, then a small snow the day before, all day in 20’s, then a period of heavy dry snow and absolutely no mixing start till finish, now cold and cloudy the day after. What an awesome event, especially after all these years of letdowns. Not huge totals here but it sounds like it snowed everywhere in the state and most if not all of central NC hit warning criteria. Happy happy happy. About to go out for my 3rd walk of the day

Cloudy? That line must be juuuust East. We haven’t had a cloud in the sky today here lol.

Are those palm trees in Raleigh?

I have a few different kinds in my yard as well. Not as tall as the ones in Eyewalls pics but they just got planted 3 yrs ago.

Back to Weather, Looks like we ended up with 2.3" of pure snow.  Good little storm, nothing crazy about it IMO. But gladly take it.  Who knows when this will happen again.  Happy for everyone whp has seen some wintry precip this past 7 days.  That covers most of us.

I’ll be the first to say it this year. You can tell we’re ramping up on the sun angle front. Side streets in the sun have cleared rapidly, and major drip on the roof.

yea, i was amazed at how warm it felt in the sun and at how quickly the roads cleared.  They were absolute sheets of ice this morning when i went out at 8:00.  By 10:30 there were already car wide paths through them all the way to the asphalt and melting off.

Kind of an odd thing to plant in Raleigh tbh

Not to create too much of an aside, but I do wonder if people moving down from the NE think this is a warmer climate than it is.

Now that things have concluded I will respond to this.  Perhaps the bolded is true but I can tell you from years and years in this forum that many long time residents of Raleigh think it is a colder and snowier climate than it is

I think it depends how long is long. Consider if you’ve lived in Raleigh since the ‘60s, you’ve seen dozens of foot+ snows, and below zero temperatures. While declining in frequency, that is more akin to a Mid-Atlantic climate than a southern one.

But the MidAtlantic is not what it was either, however that is defined

I wasn’t trying to start a climate discussion.  My comment was basically a tongue in cheek tidbit about years of Raleigh posters moaning about gradiants and being screwed several tines a winter.

3" here in NW Cary.  Pic below of the heavy band that came through around midnight last night.  Also, a snow covered road near Jordan Lake during today's snow drive.  While driving near the lake had a Honda CR-V headed in other direction spin out, over correct and end up in a ditch.
